Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Accessories C45796 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number C45796. This is the Curt Extender for 2 inch receivers providing 18 inch extension. Has its own capacity of 3,500 pounds with a towing weight capacity of 350 pounds. Has a nice black powder coat finish which is going to help us stand up against rusting corrosion and it's going to fit your 2 inch by 2 inch hitch receiver, has a nice solid shank here on the back, it's not hollow, so this extender is very durable. Just keep in mind that when using the hitch extender, it will reduce your hitch's overall capacity by 50%. This extender is going to extend your trailer hitch receiver opening out from the rear view vehicle to avoid any of those obstacles that you need to clear. You're also going to be able to gain some extra clearance for your trailer and you're going to be able to mount your hitch route accessories without having to remove your rear mount and spare tire. Now to go over a few basic measurements, we have an overall length of about 32 3/4 of an inch. The distance from the center of 1 pin hole to the other is 18 inches, so that's where we get our 18 inch extension from.

The larger portion here of our extender measuring from the opening back to this point measures about 17 inches and the part that slides into our hitch measures right at 6 inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the larger portion here of our extender measures about 3 1/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the end of our extender measures about 3 inches. Now we'll go ahead and show you how this installs. What you do is take your extended and slide it into the receiver tube of your hitch, line up your pin hole and then you'd slide in your hitch pin and clip or a hitch pin and lock. Those items are sold separately and you can refer to the Curt Extenders product page under related items to view those products. Just like that we'd be ready to load up our accessory and get on the road. That's going to complete today's review of part number C45796. That's the Curt Extender for 2 inch receivers providing 18 inches extension. .

Needed this item to be able to tow my boat behind my pick-up with 9 foot camper. Had put off towing because I thought I needed a very long extension bar coupled with a weight distribution system...which would not be compatible with my trailer anyways. So I gave up on the idea of towing with it, leaving the boat behind on trips for over ten years. That all changed when I perused the etrailer web site for solutions. Found the solution with the Curt 18" extension bar and the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch (RM-061). With a 12 inch ball mount on the end, and securing both with a pair of Roadmaster Hitch Quieters, it turned out to be perfect. I can move forward and turn either direction just past 45 degrees with out danger of a jack-knife event. My boat/motor/trailer weighs about 1,300 lbs, so I was well within the reduced weight limits imposed by using an 18" extension bar with the class III hitch. The Hitch Quieters were like "icing on the cake," eliminating 3/8" of horizontal and especially vertical "slop" and associated noise. The boat can go with me all the time now. 410693

Everything was top notch with this purchase. Juanita T. was an excellent and helpful CSR and the product was exactly what I expected. The delivery schedule was spot on per Juanita. Kudos By the way I had previously tried to purchase this product elsewhere and I was strung along for three months. The extender is very well constructed and fits well in the receiver. Works for me. Will that pull a small camper it is a 2007 layton model 151 ltd

It depends up on the loaded weight of the trailer and the capacity if the hitch. The extension reduces your hitch capacity by 50%, when you calculate that figure, compare it to the 350/3,500 pound capacity figure of the extension and abide by which ever is less. There should be an ID plate on the camper that list the GVWR or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. The trailer when fully loaded should weigh no more than the GVWR. To determine the weight of the trailer, you can either add the weight of all the items you put in it to the dry weight on the trailer ID plate or you can take it to a scale at a large fuel station and weigh it.

I bought this extender after a lot of looking around, this one does the trick!!! It is SOLID Square, not heavy wall tube, the only thing that might hurt this is a Atomic Bomb!!!!! I plan to tow my boat behind my truck with the tail gate down because the camper is 8', and my truck bed is 6'2", the 18" model was exactly what I needed. Shipping was fast, the whole buying experience was PAINLESS, will order from these folks without worry!! 303671

Prior to this order I bought an adjustable trailer hitch receiver22" to 72" wide for the rear of my RV fifth wheel that mounted great, but had to install it 18" inchs deeper on the frame. That's why I purchased the 18" long extender to bring it ever with the rear of the RV to tow a small trailer for my ATV. Everything I've bought from e-trailer has fit perfect and the best quality. Thank you, etrailer.com 223367

Extended my receiver almost to the end of the truck camper and with my drop hitch added it was the perfect length. It looks to be powder coated and the end going into my truck is solid so I don't need to ever worry about the holes "stretching". The end going to the trailer is banded with a collar. Great quality at the price. Specified expedited shipping and received it in three business days. 268995

This extender is one heavy duty piece of gear. The tenon (male) end is solid steel and should provide lots of confidence, considering the leverage that can be applied at the ball end of this extension. The finish is thick and even. eTrailer service was excellent. A small snafu with the shipment was resolved quickly and painlessly. That's the mark of a good company. 219858

The hitch part is solid square stock and not tube which I didn't expect and the receiver is rather hefty with plenty of lip around the end of the tube for reinforcement. I have a short box Chevy and an 8 ft slide in camper and needed to extend past the down tailgate for the toy trailer. This works just right. 290440

Received my 18" extender for my 2" receiver in 3 days. It's going to work perfectly, enabling me to haul bikes with the Thule spare me bike rack at the same time as cargo on a luggage rack at the end of the 18" extender on my Jeep Wrangler. Product is super heavy, therefore, super durable. 390989

  • Recommended Bike Rack With Tilt or Swing for Truck Bed Camper Rear Door Access
  • For your 2014 GMC Sierra with in-bed camper, I recommend the Curt Extender for 2" Receivers -18" Long # C45796. This will get your trailer hitch out far enough so you can add your bike rack. Using an adapter like this will reduce your trailer hitch receiver's tongue weight rating by 50% which should leave you in fine condition for a 2 bike rack. For your 2 bike rack, I recommend the RockyMounts BackStage 2 Bike Platform Rack - 2" - Tilting - Swinging # RKY10002. This rack will securely...

  • Is 24 Inch Extension Available for Class IV 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver on 2008 Dodge Ram 3500
  • The longest hitch extender that is available for the Class IV 2 inch hitch on your 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 is going to be an 18 inch like part # C45796. Please keep in mind that using a hitch extension is going to reduce your hitch's overall capacity by 50 percent. For a 24 inch extension your Ram would have to be equipped with a Torklift Hitch, # TLD1102-30 for Ram with factory hitch or # TLD1101 for Ram without factory hitch. You could then use # TLE1524 for the extender.

  • For a 2-inch hitch the longest hitch extensions we offer are the 60-inch # TLE1560 and 48-inch # TLE1548, both from TorkLift. However, these only work along with a TorkLift brand SuperHitch dual-receiver type hitch that has the strength and included safety chains to handle the extra stress from the trailer load being further from the hitch. To use one of these you will need to also install a SuperHitch. The longest standard 2-inch hitch extension that will work in any hitch is 18-inches,...

  • Comparing Reese and Curt 18 Inch Hitch Extenders
  • One of the biggest differences between Reese adapter # RP11004 and the Curt model # C45796 is the warranty. Curt ball mounts and extenders are generally covered for 1 year. The Reese model though has a limited lifetime warranty. On both the shank that fits into the 2 inch receiver is solid. There isn't a difference in the steel wall thickness; you're looking at approximately 1/8 of an inch. Regarding the tongue weight capacity reductions: The Reese extender reduction has changed...

  • Our roller bunk manufacturers do not exclude aluminum boats, however, one issue that you could run into when using roller bunks on an aluminum boat is that the only support the boat's hull will have is the small surface of the rollers. If the boats hull is not strong enough to support it's weight on the small surface area of the rollers, then you could see dimpling on the hull from the rollers. A carpeted bunk provides more surface area for the boats hull to rest on. I spoke with my...

  • We do have hitch extenders for 2-inch hitches that can help with clearance needed when the truck has a slide-in camper in the bed and is towing a trailer. These are shown on the linked page and they come in various lengths and weight ratings. The longest extension that carries a 10K rating is the 12-inch Blue Ox # BX88264. The Curt extension # C45796 that you referenced is rated for only 3500-lbs. If your truck were equipped with a TorkLift SuperHitch you could use their 24-inch extension...

  • Could Curt Extender # C45796 be Used with 2015 Dodge Ram 1500 with Tailgate Down
  • Hitch extenders like the part # C45796 that you referenced can work great for your application but the catch is that they cut the capacity of the hitch they are installed in by 50 percent. Since your trailer has a dry weight of 2,800 lbs your trailer hitch would need to have a capacity of 5,600 lbs for it to work. Also the extender itself cannot be used to tow more than 3,500 lbs so you'd need to verify you are under that capacity as well.

  • Can Curt 2-Inch Hitch Extender # C45796 Be Used on 2007 Hummer H2
  • If the hitch on your 2007 H2 is a 2-inch size then you can use an adapter/extender like the Curt Hitch Extender # C45796. However, you need to be aware that use of any extender will reduce your hitch's tongue weight and towing weight ratings by 50-percent. This loss of hitch capacity results from the change in the geometry of the forces on the hitch. In the same way that slipping a length of pipe over a tire iron gives you more leverage to loosen a stubborn lug nut, using an extender...

  • How to Extend a Class III, 2 Inch Trailer Hitch at Least 24 Inches
  • The longest hitch extender for 2 inch hitches is 18 inches long, # C45796. If you use it with a long ball mount, # C45230, it would provide and overall extension of about 29 inches. Please note that the use of an extender will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent at least. If you were to use the ball mount only it would not reduce the tongue weight capacity. But by using an extender it does reduce the capacity.

  • Recommended Extra Long Ball Mount For 2001 Ram 3500 With 11.5 Lance Camper
  • For your 2001 Ram 3500 Dually 4x4 with Lance 11.5 camper, I recommend the Hidden Hitch Ball Mount # 80232. This extra long ball mount will allow you to put the hitch ball center 15-3/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole on your trailer hitch receiver. It will give you 11-1/4 inches from that hitch pin center to the closest edge of the ball platform piece. This is rated for 6,000 lbs. I recommend the # 63845 for a 2 inch hitch ball or # 19261 for a 1-7/8 inch ball. If...

  • Can Hitch Extender Be Used On 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited With Spare Tire For Cargo Carrier
  • When you intend to install any accessory in the hitch on the back of your 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, you will need to consider the spare tire and whether it will interfere with the items you want to use. You can take a measurement to see what will work for you. You will need a tape measure and a straight edge like a yardstick or a dowel. Place the straight edge vertically against the back of the spare tire, letting it extend below the trailer hitch receiver opening. Then measure from...

  • Trailer Hitch Extension to Keep Trailer From Contacting Truck During Turns
  • You want to make sure the hitch ball is out past the furthest point of the truck. An 18 inch extender like the Curt # C45796 will reach most of the way to the edge of the truck. Then any ball mount will make up the rest. We have a ball mount kit, # 989900, that includes two different ball mounts and hitch balls that may work for you. Depending on the rise or drop you need, if any, with your trailer.

  • Hitch Extension Compatibility with Weight Distribution System
  • The only hitch extension we offer that is compatible with weight distribution hitches is the Titan Hitch Box Extension and Reducer # RP45292. This product is designed to fit hitches with a 2-1/2 inch receiver opening and then reduces down to a 2 inch hitch opening. This means you will need a hitch with a 2-1/2 inch opening and a weight distribution system designed for a 2 inch opening. Without knowing what vehicle you have I cannot recommend a hitch, but I did attach a page that has all...

  • Hitch Extender Compatibility with 2 Inch Receiver Load Extender
  • The Replacement Backbone for Thule 2 Bike Expansion Accessory # 753-3588 will not work with your load extender, however I do have an option for you. The Curt Extender for 2" Receivers -18" Long # C45796 will work in a similar way and will be just 1 inch shorter than the Thule part you mentioned. This will reduce your hitch tongue weight capacity by 50% and you will want to consider the amount of torque on your hitch from having an accessory carrying weight that far out from your hitch....

  • Hitch Extender for 2-1/2-Inch Hitch That Converts Opening to 2-Inches
  • We do offer hitch extenders/adapters that will fit into a 2-1/2-inch hitch and reduce the receiver opening size down to a 2-inch size but none of these is 18-inches long. There is another way to go that might work for your application. You could use a hitch reducer sleeve # 58102 in your 2-1/2-inch hitch to drop it down to the 2-inch size, and then simply use 18-inch hitch extender # C45796 or # HE18, both of which are rated for 3500-lbs. Do note that use of any hitch adapter/extender...

  • Could Hitch Extender Be Used Towing Trailer with Ford F-150 that Has Camper Installed
  • Hitch extenders like the part # HE06 cut the tongue capacity of the hitch they are installed on by 50 percent, but it sounds like your trailer weighs less than 50 percent of your towing capacity so you will be fine. If you needed an 18 inch extension you would want the part # C45796 but you should note that this has a capacity of exactly 3,500 lbs total trailer weight and 350 lbs tongue weight.

  • Availability of 2-Inch Hitch Extensions for Towing with 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500
  • Curt Combo Bar # C49360 is a fabrication part with a raw metal finish that is intended for use in welding/fabrication. Examples of applications are adding a 2-inch receiver to a suitable vehicle or trailer frame. But we do offer hitch extensions that are made for use in 2-inch hitches like the one on your 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. These extensions, such as # C45796 from Curt and the others on the linked page, have a powder-coat finish to protect them from corrosion and they do not...

  • Does Torklift 7-Way Extension Require Mounting Bracket on Hitch Extender
  • For a 7-way extension to go with the Curt Extender part # C45796 the part # TLW6021 would be the best option. The bracket part # C58000 would be your best option as it will hold the 7-way socket which can be hard to keep off the ground but if you wanted to wrap the harness around the extender to keep it off the ground that is an option as well.
