With a 2" x 2" receiver opening, this Curt Class III hitch is built for everyday use and light to moderate towing. It’s rated for up to 5,000 lbs gross trailer weight and 500 lbs tongue weight, or 6,000 lbs GTW and 600 lbs TW when used with weight distribution. That strength makes it perfect for hauling small campers, boats, or utility trailers, and for carrying bike racks or cargo carriers when you need extra space.
The fully welded steel hitch bolts right to the vehicle’s frame using a complete hardware kit—no welding or special tools required. It’s designed as a custom fit with precision robotic welding to ensure proper alignment and maximum strength. Everything lines up cleanly so the install goes quickly whether you’re working in a driveway or garage.
The hitch’s powder coated steel resists rust and corrosion, keeping it looking good and performing strong over time. A gloss black powder coat finish is applied over a protective base coat for superior durability. The round-tube design gives it a clean look that blends nicely under the rear bumper while still being tough enough for regular towing duties.

Powder coating had several scratches and scuffs, and it didn't look like this happened during shipping. Items were packed extremely well. It wouldn't win a car show, but it was a perfect fit with the included parts. My daughter said it was the fastest project we've ever done on her vehicle. Very easy to install on a 1998 4Runner Limited.
HITCH AND MOUNTING KITThis hitch fit my truck perfect. Everything came on time and hooked right up. Awesome deal!!! Great quality!
Product was in excellent condition when delivered. Awesome company. Nice customer service.
Perfect fit. took longer to get the factory hook eyes off than to install.
Excellent shipping.
WE ORDERED A CARGO BAG AND A TRAILER HITCH RECEIVER EVERYTHING WAS SHIPPED OUT AND I RECIEVED IT REALLy FAST. WE ARE VERY PLEASED WITH THE PRODUCTS AND SERVICE . THANKS ALOT
Everything is good and solid, but the inside of the receiver itself is already rusting.
This could not have been easier to install. I didn't even have to lower the spare tire. Fit perfectly. Thanks etrailer.
Great product. Quick and cheap shipping. Easy installation. Very pleased all around.
Great quality product. Bolted right up and didn't have any fitment issues. Kelsey was more than helpful through the whole process when I placed my order. Won't order from anywhere else.
The hitch was excellent, and arrived even quicker than anticipated. Putting it on was a snap, with the only difficulty in removing the bolts holding the rear tow hooks - I had to take the car to a auto shop so they could remove the bolts with an impact wrench.
Hitch arrived on time and in perfect condition. Am very happy with this purchase. Install was very quick and easy, same for the wiring kit. I would recommend e-trailer to anybody shopping for trailer-related products.
Beautiful product, it was shipped on time and in one piece. Great service and follow-up from George and eTrailer.
easy installationOrdering was simple. Shipping tracking information reliable & on time. Very easy to install. Instructions were very specific to the '98 4runner, including wiring specifics. All very easy. Looks good on vehicle
The hitch was a perfect fit for our 1999 4Runner. No issues after 1 year installed.

The hitch is holding up perfectly. No complaints.
My Curt hitch arrived quickly and in great shape. Looks like a quality product and no issues with the fit on my 2000 4Runner. Install was a snap with my son helping hold the hitch in place while I was able to get the bolts started. I suppose you could install by yourself but avoid the headache and have somebody help you.
Installation was a breeze! Bolted right up. I was able to wire up and install the receiver in about an hour and a half! Great product! My only complaint is it needed to be packaged better. The receiver bounced around the box quite a bit and crushed one of the wire connectors. I was able to squeeze it back into shape though so no big deal.
Everything fit perfectly from the hitch to the wiring kit. I couldn't be
more pleased with the price, product, ordering, and the shipment arrived even sooner than estimated. The instructions were step by step exactly how to install it. I will use and recommend etrailer without any hesitation. Thank you
Everything was shipped to me in very good time, the product was as described. My only complaint is that after spending $240 bucks on the hitch, mount, & ball there was no locking pin included with any of it. I found that to be highly annoying. Please begin including a lock pin with your mounts. The cost you practically nothing and would make me and other customers more satisfied, and would save your customers from having to take an extra trip to the auto parts store.
Quick delivery and easy installation! High quality trailer hitch and easy-to-install wiring harness. No problems at all. Would highly recommend this product to all those who own a 1996 through 2002 Toyota 4Runner. Liked e-trailer website as well.
I am very pleased with the quality of this hitch kit. Installation was very easy. had to have the tow hooks taken off of my truck by a mechanic with a pneumatic wrench since they were on there so tight before I could install it but I think anyone could have done it at home with a "cheater" bar. I also don't have a torque wrench so I just put all the bolts on tight. The next time I have the truck in the shop for service, I'll have them set the bolts at the recommended torque. Too easy. =)
Replaced my Toyota installed hitch with this one because the Toyota hitch receiver is too low for my new set up (a Curt multipurpose trailer hitch with a bike rack adapter so I can carry my bikes and my tent trailer). New Curt hitch was delivered on time and was very easy to install. It took me 4 hours to remove the existing Toyota hitch (one trip to tool store) and about an hour to install the new Curt. If you are replacing an existing Toyota hitch, there is one existing bolt which is covered by the RHS tailpipe. This existing bolt may be a pain to get out, and you'll need a good heavy duty Crescent wrench or 18mm wrench, and possibly a wrench extender. I had to remove the RHS rear mud deflector to crank on it.
Its a solid hitch, bought to put a bike rack on my 4runner and it has been great. Install was pretty simple, though one of the bolts stripped its threads when torqued to spec, so had to get a replacement for that. The paint has also needed some touch up, as after only one winter in upstate NY there is some rust starting on the welds. But, for the price, I am happy with it!
Setting up a 2001 4Runner with a receiver and trailer lights is pretty simple. etrailer.com offers everything one could possibly need in the way of materials and assistance. Of three possible receivers, I chose the Curt Class III Round Tube Receiver Hitch (#13157).
While the Curt hitch itself is solid, the mounting and fitment is not.
Unfortunately, they imply this is a no drill, bolt-on, 'custom fit' unit... that is NOT an accurate statement and is misleading. My fault for not taking a much closer look at the instructions & diagram (PDF).
The hitch frame extends beyond the end of the vehicle's frame, and requires a set of welded nut-plates to clamp the rearward bolt holes past the ends of the vehicle frame rails. This means the entire hitch receiver is positioned further back on the vehicle frame than the factory hitch. The Curt hitch is shifted 6" rear of OEM bolt holes.
What this does is cause more force to be exerted at the rear of the frame rails. Since the trailer we intend to pull is already pushing the limits of allowable tongue-weight, I decided the Curt hitch was not a good solution... too much leverage placed at ends of the frame rails.
A true bolt-on 'custom fit' hitch for a 1997 4Runner is the DrawTite Max (model 75091). It uses the same bolt holes as the OEM hitch. We returned the Curt and are very happy with the DrawTite Max.
Also, the receiver tube on the DrawTite is a bit longer than the Curt.
For most applications the Curt may be fine, but for our situation it was simply -not- an acceptable or well-designed 'custom' solution.
Received on time and installed fairly easy. One old man and a set of Jack stands but it wasn't bad. I ran the wiring out of the jack storage compartment so it's never seen until it's used. Overall good clean job and well satisfied! Now to find me a bike!

Hi Mark, Thanks for your feedback! Our customer service team will be reaching out to you. With the scratches, Id recommend covering the scratches with a rust resistant paint to help prevent premature rusting. I have attached a helpful article that goes into better detail.
