Video Transcript for Tow Ready Tow Package Wiring Harness Installation - 2002 Ford F-150

Today, our 2002 Ford F150 SuperCrew Cab, we're going to install part number 118242. This is a Ford replacement OEM tow-package wiring harness. Now, what this will do, it will upgrade your preexisting 4-pole harness on tow package up to a 7-pole. Now, our new upgrade harness will actually work with a factory 4-pole wire harness. In this case we don't have our 4-pole anymore, so that's why we're upgrade. Our connection point is right here on the frame rail on the driver's side.

Yes, you definitely want to take the spare tire out of the way so you can see what's going on. This is our connection point and this is our ground. We're going to have to take apart the ground and our connection point. Then we'll go ahead and move this off the frame rail. A small pry bar or trim panel tool will work to get the classic part off here; we'll have easier access to our wire harness. Now, we need to take this apart, push down on this tab, and pull it apart.

Then we can go ahead and start to install our new parts. We've got our new wire harness and basically T into the middle of these two connectors; push them together until they click. Then, we'll go ahead and install our white wire at the ring terminal with the original one and original screw back into the frame. We'll snap this back into its original place, a little push fastener. I'm going to take the indirect cable; it'll go towards our bumper. I like to route it over the frame, back down to the bumper.

Now, at this point it's personal preference how you route your wire harness to the eventual location of your 7-pole connector. Let's go ahead and use a zip tie to help contain our wires, keep them safe and secure. Now, the kit doesn't come with many zip ties, so you may want to go get yourself some. Now, this is our 7-pole connector that'll eventually plug into the back of our wire harness here. This is like Ford factory.

To do that, I will now mount a couple of brackets to hold our 7-pole in place. Now, the bracket we're going to install is part number 18140 from Tow Ready. This is their universal mounting bracket. This bracket is going to attach to the bottom of our hitch and use this clamp to hold it in place. Now you take the screw and a clamp and bend it out of the way to make it easier to run the clamp through and then push it back up. Then use a 5/16ths nut driver to tighten it up. I'm just going to bend that guy up and out of the way for the excess. Now, the bracket we're going to use to hold our 7-pole connector up will be part number PK12711U. This is a mounting bracket for 7-pole connectors from Pollak. Also, we're going to need some hardware to do this. This will be hardware installation kit PK11926. Now to make our connection we're going to use the parts that came with our first bracket to attach these two. Our hardware kit will work with the 7-pole connector itself. A number two Phillips screwdriver will work to tighten down our hardware. Let's go ahead and mount our 7-pole connector, using the hardware kit for 7-pole bracket; flat blade screwdriver for these screws. Then, we can go ahead and plug our wire harness into our 7-pole connector. Now on this connector here, it's a good idea to use some dielectric grease. We'll be using part number 11755 from Lubrimatic. Push these two together until they click and there's also a small grey lock that goes on the end here. Now, typically this piece is already installed on here, but you might want to take it off before you do your installation to make it easier to snap together. So, to take it off, you just push down right here with a really small screwdriver. Push down in the middle and then remove it. When we need to use it, we just line it up and push it into place. All right, next we'll get underneath the hood of the truck and we'll go to the fuse panel here. We'll open it up, take the lid off. There's a couple of relays and fuses that we have to install. At this point, you definitely want to go by the owner's manual and find the locations for your fuses. Now, a lot of times the relays and fuses are already installed onto your truck. So, it's just basically you got to just investigate and see what you need and what you don't need. Now, in our particular truck, we only had to install the backup relay, which is located right here. On our battery charge circuit for our trailer, the relay goes right there. Everything else is already installed on the truck. The fuses that came with the kit, we couldn't use in this one because they're already fuses in the areas of the fuse box of our truck. So, we are done. We have everything in place it's a good idea to test it out with a tester before you try it on a trailer. With that, that'll finish it for our install, part number 118242 full replacement OEM tow-package wiring harness on our 2002 Ford F150 SuperCrew Cab. .

Ford Replacement OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness, 7-Way - 118242

Easy to install, and worked great until I backed into a concrete light pole support. I needed a new socket end where the trailer plugs in, as original was smashed up and spring cover wouldn't close right. etrailers on-line chat was worthless to try and find a direct fit w/o having to buy a whole new kit. I researched it myself and took a chance and ordered two (2) of etrailers Pollak Replacement 7-pole, RV-Style, Trailer Connector Socket-Vehicle End-PK11893 (Pollak PA66-GF30). This is a perfect replacement for the original that came with this 118242 harness kit. Bought 2 to have spare for next back-up incident.....

No change to original review, AND I DID NOT smash up another socket yet, so still got my spare.....2001 F-150

Excellent product. High quality and easy installation. Made better than a factory harness I have on a different vehicle. I also purchased the mounting bracket and hardware kit. The bracket is wonderful and most of the hardware was good too. The self tapping screws both got the heads broke off, but it was my fault, not the screws.

Still working flawlessly, the factory 4 flat isnt working but this one still works like it did when brand new. Highly recommended.

I installed the wiring on my Ford F250. I've had the wiring for about a year with zero problems. The wiring package had everything I needed for a complete installation. It was easy to install. We've towed our RV over 6,000 miles since the installation. The harness has held up just fine in all types of weather and climates. Also, hats off to Kennika for her exceptional customer service.

Your product fits perfectly I customize the 7 way plug into my bumper I didn't like the way the bracket let hang down so far ill send another picture with me pulling my drag truck with the van thanks again.

1997 Ford F-150 and F-250 Light Duty

The tow package I purchased last year, fits great and installed perfectly. It works perfectly with my electronic under-dash brake controller.

The kit came with everything that I needed and instructions were easy to read I had the entire kit installed in about 40 minutes it's work Flawless for me for over a year and I tow a variety of trailers the plug is never failed due to workmanship it is still water tight.

The receiver cap spring still has excellent tension to help hold the plug into place, the only gripe I have is that I should have installed stainless mounting screwswhen I installed the kit because the mounting starting are starting to rust a little, but that's my oversight and is nothing to do with the kit and its ability to provide flawless service.

I highly recommend this product if you're like me and was looking for an oem Plug and Play setup!

5 stars!

My truck already had 7 pin harness but had a ground issue. Replaced it with this one and it works great now. Plugged right in but had to leave old harness in to get taillights to work. Way less expensive than buying OE harness from Ford
Thanks etrailer

this adapter is not the only item i bought, i ended buying multiple plug adapters in hopes of finding one that worked, well to make a long story short i ended up taking my motorhome with all the plugs that i had bought to giant r.v. and sales that said please fix it. the bill came to 679.01 so instead of being a plug and play it turn out to be plug and pay. but on the bright side i have extra plug that i will never use.

Thanks for the follow up Charles, This 7-way is intended to be a 7-way replacement for the trailer connector on older model Ford F-150s but is is not a fit for either your 2017 F-150 or intended to be used as a flat tow wiring harness for flat towing your F-150 behind your motorhome. I have included a link to the trailer connectors confirmed as a fit for your and a link for the vehicle tow bar wiring for flat towing your F-150 behind your motorhome.

The turn around on this order was awesome. I haven't instaiied it yet but it looks simple. I was a little disappointed that there was no mounting bracket with this, but no fear I'm going to bore a hole it the bumper and with some self tapping screws we will be up and running in no time. I'll post some pictures of the completed job. Thanks for your excellent service

The harness I purchased for my 2002 Ford F-150 was fine with no problems installing it. However, it did not solve the problem I had (no right stop/turn signal and no running lights). I suspect the problem lies elsewhere and is no fault of the new harness.

Thanks for your review and your purchase, Dave! Often, the culprit is a kinked wire on the trailer or a bad ground. To assist you in troubleshooting your trailer wiring, I have included a link to our help article.

I was unable to find the problem I was having and ended up removing the harness and just tapping into the trucks lighting system with a smaller, basic harness I already had. But Ill give you an A plus for customer purchase follow up - very nice to see nowadays!

2001 FordF-150

The product works as described. The only problem I encountered was on a 2001 F150 crewcab. The connector that connected to the wire harness coming from the front of the vehicle did not have any catch mechanism so it wouldn't stay together enough for the right side lights(on truck and trailer) to work. I used some channel locks and pushed together as far as I could without breaking anything then used electrical tape to tape it together. Of course after I crawled out form under truck and put spare back in place I realized I should have used a zip tie to hold it. Would probably last longer and hold better. Everything works well. I do not have a brake controller hooked up on vehicle yet.

2003 FordF-150

My F150 had an OEM 4 pin trailer plug and hitch.
The 118242 - 7 pin connector with wiring harness is the ticket. The hardest part of the install was dropping the spare tire. The plugs connect directly to the factory plugs and the harness length is the correct length.
The 3035-P brake controller connector harness was just as easy. Plugs right in to the OEM plug next to the ECM connector and the other end into the brake controller.
The PK12711U-26 - 7 pin bracket and hardware kit fastens directly the OEM bracket that is on the hitch. My truck had an OEM 4 pin trailer towing set up with the hitch. The OEM hitch had the bracket welded on it to attach the 7 pin mounting bracket to it.
These kits make this install very easy and professional looking.
If I have one complaint, the hardware kit to attach the 7 pin connector bracket is set up to fasten the bracket directly to the bumper with 2 - self tapping screws provided in the kit. The kit also includes 4 #12 machine screws with toothed washer nuts to attached the 7 pin connector to the bracket. This is fine if your truck hitch doesn't have an attaching bracket welded to it. The kit should included in it 6 #12 machine screws and nuts along with the 2 self tapping screws. Since my OEM hitch actually had a bracket welded to it to attach the 7 pin bracket to it, I had to use two other #12 screws and nuts to attach the 7 pin bracket to the OEM bracket on the hitch. Not a big deal, just a thought.
It took me about 2 hours, start to finish to install the 7 pin connector, trailer controller, and add the two relays in the OEM relay/fuse box under the hood.
I highly recommend these kits.

We purchased a 5th trailer and needed to have my Ford F-150 wired for trailer brakes and 7 pin harness. Checked your website and was able to find all parts I needed. The installaton videos you have are awesome, they help out so much. Ordered all parts and they arrived quickly. All parts were identical to what was ordered. Had everything installed and wired in, in about 45 minutes. They wiring harness was perfect fit and they trailer brake control harness also exact fit. My overall experience was awesome from placing the order and the e-mails to let me know who took my order and who sent it and tracking it. I will recomond etrailer to everyone I can. Thanks to etrailer we are ready to tow our trailer.******

by:
2003 FordF-150

Installation of the actual harness was easy. However, if you have the factory 4-pin flat connector without the 7-blade connector, you will need to purchase or make a bracket for the 7-blade connector. On an F-150 there is very little space to add an additional bracket, so I extended the 4-pin bracket and made the extension so that it held both the 4-pin and 7-blade connectors. There is a bracket, a Ford part, specifically marketed for the Harley Davidson edition, FY3Z-14A163-CA, which may or may not fit the standard F-150. Also, another part, FL3Z-14A163-BA may or may not fit.

by:
FordF-150

This kit was exactly what I needed for my '03 F150 to pull my trailer. It was simple to install and nothing additional was needed in my case. The connectors are usually already there if you have the tow package and a 4-pin. Just remove the spare and the connectors are there and it was simple as pie from there. etrailer is the best place for all your needs and I would highly recommend them to anyone needing parts or supplies for their towing needs. Great products, great company!

Easiest trailer plug I have ever installed...lowered spare tire (but did not remove) and then unplugged the stock wire plugged this in line and mounted it all to the brackets i purchased here at same time, had it all wrapped up and completed in under half hour, with my 4 year old daughters help of course!

by:
2004 Ford F-150 Heritage Series

I put off wiring my truck with a 7 way plug for years because I didn't want to deal with the hassle...WRONG. I found this somewhat accidentally and installation was easy. One word of caution; read the short instructions twice so you don't get worried if you have extra parts. My installation did not require the two blade fuses (but of course that was clearly stated in the instructions). I am very pleased.

Products are great and the customer service is even better! I recently purchased some things from etrailer for my 1998 Ford F-150. Delivery was on time like promised but when it arrived the box was heavily damaged. To top it off four out of the five products that I ordered were not even in the box. UPS driver told me that’s all that he had for me and also told me to reject the delivery and he loaded the damaged box back into the truck.
I called customer service at etrailer and explained what had happened. They gave me the option of my money back or re-shipping. I chose the re-shipping. The delivery was made again and this time everything was there and no damage! Thank you etrailer for your excellent customer service. I will never go anywhere else for my trailer/towing needs.

  • Radiator Cooling Fan Fuse/Relay Location on a 2011 Ford F-150
There are typically two cooling fans attached to a radiator, the high speed fan and the low speed fan. I looked in the owner's manual for your 2011 Ford F-150 and its does not specify which fuse is for which fan so you will just need to check all of the ones that relate to the electric fan circuit which I have listed for you below. The fuse will be more or less apparent if blown but the relay will be more difficult to check. If you switch the suspected faulty relay out for one that you...

On your 2006 Ford F-150 there are special fuses for the tow package right/left turn and brake circuits. The left side is in location 42 and the right side is location 36. If the fuse is good in location 42 then the issue is likely the wiring somewhere from the front of the truck to the trailer connectors. You will need to trace the wiring as best you can and fix any breaks in the wiring. Also make sure that the connection to the back of the connectors is good and not corroded.

  • Replacement 7-Way Blade Vehicle Wiring Harness For a 1997 Ford F-150 Truck
The Ford Replacement OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness # 118242 will connect to your 1997 Ford F-150 further up the harness inside the frame rail. I have included a picture of this connector. You will not use the black and gray connectors that you have included in your pictures. I recommend using Dielectric Grease # 11755 on the wiring connectors. This will help protect the wiring connectors from moisture and corrosion. A new Mounting Bracket # PK12711U may be required if your old bracket...

  • Replacement 7-Way Recommendation for 2002 Ford F-150
The only option for that would be the part # 118242 which comes with a 7-way and harness plus a few relays and fuses that will attach to the factory square connector of your truck. Then you would have to swap the 7-way of that kit out with the part # 30955 which has the 7 and 4-way. If the round connector behind your current 7-way is in tact you could use just this adapter and you would be good to go.

  • Recommended Brake Controller for a 2011 Ford F-150
You should not need to locate any loose wires to install a brake controller on your 2011 Ford F-150. Your truck should have come with a trailer connector of some kind, either a 4-Way flat or a 7-Way. In either case you would just need to use the appropriate wiring harness for the truck and controller that you use. For example if you used the P2, # 90885, then you would need wiring harness # 22292. I have linked a video to the right showing where the harness installs for you.

  • Parts for Installing 7Way on a 1999 Ford Expedition
Though the two vehicles are based on the same frame, they are very different and are wired very differently. If the Expedition was not ordered with the factory 7Way Tow Package, it will not have the wiring provisions for a 7Way. But the parts are available to get a 7Way installed. If you already have a 4Way flat connector, you would need part # 37185. We have a video of this part being installed on a 1999 Ford F-250 that may be helpful to you. If you do not have any trailer connector,...

  • Recommended Brake Controller And Harness For 2002 Ford F-150
Since you said you have a 4-way connector on your 2002 Ford F-150, I can make some recommendations that may be very simple for you. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885. This is one of our most popular brake controllers because it is easy to install and operate. The harness you need is part # 3035-P. One end connects to the brake controller and the other end connects to the built-in harness located beneath your truck's dash, normally located to the left...

  • Parts Needed To Charge and Maintain Trailer Battery
There are a couple things needed to be able to charge the battery on your trailer. First you will need to make sure the alternator on your vehicle can handle charging the trailer battery. Second, you will need a heavy-duty wire that can handle the amperage for the distance needed. I recommend using the 7-way connector to provide the maintenance charge for the trailer battery. The wire gauge on the wire that is used to maintain a charge on your trailer battery would be 10 gauge, like part...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Turn Signals on 1997 Ford F150 With Factory Wiring Harness
You can check the mini fuse panel located behind the power distribution box. There should be a 20-amp fuse in location 2 for the trailer tow stop/turn lamps. Also, in the power distribution box, there is a 40-amp fuse in location 16 for trailer tow battery charge and stop/turn lamps. If this fails to correct the problem, you can troubleshoot. The best way is to disconnect the truck and trailer and test each one individually. If you happen to have access to another truck or trailer that...

  • Trailer Lights Do Not Work with 2005 Ford F-150 That Has No Power to Fuses
Some Ford trucks that do not have the factory tow package can still have dummy fuse locations for the trailering functions. These fuse receptacles may not be live on such trucks. You can check with your local Ford dealer using your VIN to see exactly what equipment Ford installed in the truck at the factory. You can also still install a 4-pole using kit # 18252. This will splice into your tail light wiring using the included fasteners and the included circuit tester allows you to identify...
