Installation
This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side interior trim panel in your rear cargo area.
Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.
It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.
A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.
Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.
Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.
Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

The instructions do not mention what to do if your XJ has a factory trailer harness installed. Mine was missing the outside plug end, so I replaced the entire harness. As a consequence, I had to cut the wires on the factory wire harness inside the vehicle leaving hot wires exposed. I taped them so as not to create a short.
Works well and easy to install. Good detailed instructions.
Awesome possum
The hitch and wiring harness were delivered quickly to me, in excellent condition. I am thoroughly impressed with everything, quality, additional installation tools, videos and heck, even how the hitch was packaged. Etrailer.com definitely has my future business, and I'm pleased and thrilled to recommend them to you. Have fun everyone, and as always be safe!
The hitch looks good the packaging stinks. The box was destroyed when I received it you need to do a much better job in shipping your hitches
I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee with separate stop lamps and turn signal lamps. I added a hitch and as I was wiring the 7 pin connector I realized that I needed a converter to combine the separate stop and turn signals into one signal for the trailer. I first bought a universal unit, but realized I’d have to hack into the wiring at the rear of the Jeep to make it work. eTrailer has a converter with the same connectors that the Jeep has which makes it plug and play. I just completed installing the converter and testing the wiring with a trailer connected it worked flawlessly. Happy camper here.
Every thing went as planned, very easy install, four stars because the little sticky pad was dried out and useless. I tie strapped the box but really wanted a vibration isolated which was what I was going to use the sticky pad for. So I hunted down a piece of foam rubber. 20 minute job and you have trailer lights!
Plug and play was great. Easiest trailer wire installation I've ever done.
Absolutely perfect for my jeep Cherokee
Well designed and solid build. Installed easily in minutes.
This worked perfect and was a direct fit for my 97 jeep cherokee wiring harness. It is still working 1 year later with no issues.
Arrived with the hitch in two days to Indiana, Dec 23rd at that.
This wiring harness was the way to go, I only had to pull off one side panel where the spare is located. I plugged it in and right below was a rubber knock out to fish the 4 connector through.
Product connected easily and worked as it should for my '99 Jeep XJ.
The trailer lights were not working consistently so I had to install a new flasher in the XJ (6 light flasher) and changed the trailer lights to LEDs. After this change I had no issues.

Product is still working. Needed to upgrade trailer lights to LEDs to resolve issues.
Awesome product. No fuss wiring. Worked like a charm. Used to on my 1999 Jeep Cherokee to haul my home built camping trailer. I tried to do my own hack job wiring from auto parts store but it didn't work that well. Blew fuse to my turn signals. Will recommend to others.

Thank you for the follow-up. It still works great. I highly recommend it.
I installed one of these two years ago on my 97 Jeep Cherokee XJ and used it with a light trailer that only had brake/tail and blinkers. The installation is pretty simple as far as the init goes. Ground and connect the connectors with your vehicles factory wiring.
After I used the wiring harness for about 1 year the lights stopped working on the trailer and after doing some investigation, I learned the wiring harness had failed. A rep from E trailer said this occasionally happens if the trailer wiring has a short or other problem.
I ended up re-wiring my trailer from tongue to lights and had to buy a new wiring harness for my Jeep. Admittedly, this failure was my fault, but be sure your trailer wiring is in good shape.
Worked fine and quick install. However, would be nice to have a mounting bracket for the trailer plug to be able to have a permanent mount.
Shipping was fast! Price was very reasonable! Installation was easy, it doesn't get much better than that. Thanks etrailer.
The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector made a huge difference in the amount of light my Jeep Cherokee headlights provided for night time driving.
5 star all went with out an issue, done in ten minutes,
I am very pleased with the Curt trailer harness. It is simple plug and play with no splicing. I was having trouble with my old harness and Cathy explained to me that my Jeep used a separate lamp for stop and turn indicator while trailers use a common lamp for stop and turn and a converter that is factory wired in the harness was needed. After her explanation, I knew my problem was solved and when the harness arrived, it did solve the problem. I am 75 years old and have been fixing things for 60 years. Having a customer service person who actually knows her product like Cathy does has almost become a thing of the past.
Great business to buy from. I ordered a trailer light wiring harness for my jeep in the evening recently, and by about 5 am the following morning it shipped. The price was great, in fact cheaper than what I saw elsewhere. I also had a question about a problem with my trailer lights that I asked them and got a detailed responsored in less than 24 hours. I will definitely be a repeat customer.
The product fits perfectly. It installs well and quite easily with only a screwdriver needed to access my 1999 Jeep Cherokee's (XJ) wiring. There is ample wire length for the use of connecting to a trailer tongue. This is far superior and worth the investment over universal options that require splicing or pinching into the stock wiring. I use a home-installed Curt hidden hitch as well, with which I have been very satisfied for its function, look, fit, and ease of installation.
The standard shipping method worked well for me, living in a large metro area. The product arrived sooner than anticipated.
The wiring harness was plug and play. No wire cutting or splicing. More than enough length. Easy installation with the help of the detailed instructions.
Very easy to install. Had to work out the routing of the wires from inside the vehicle to the trailer hitch. Has been working well since installation.
Got it quick; installation was a cinch. I'm very glad I didn't go with patching in the bargain version I'd originally planned. Highly recommended!
