Features to know about

Built for a Clean Look: Hidden Brackets with Removable Drawbars

This base plate keeps things neat when you’re not towing. The hidden bracket design tucks into the frame, so the mounting points stay out of sight. Each drawbar slides out easily and secures with two hitch pins, leaving behind brackets that are virtually invisible and protected within the grille. It’s a setup that looks clean and stays free of scuffs or snags when you’re driving solo.

Strong Where It Counts: Computer-Cut, All-Steel Construction

The frame-mounted brackets are computer-cut from solid steel for a precise fit and dependable strength. Every weld and edge is made to handle the stress of long-haul towing without flexing or fatigue. The black powder coat finish resists corrosion, keeping the hardware looking sharp and doing its job mile after mile.

No Welding Needed: Simple Bolt-On Installation

This kit installs with standard tools and requires no welding. Everything you need—including mounting hardware and clear instructions—is in the box. With properly aligned holes and a straightforward layout, it’s a practical setup for anyone who prefers to do their own work and get things bolted up right the first time.

Works Seamlessly with Roadmaster Tow Bars

The design matches Roadmaster tow bars when used with the quick-disconnect crossbar (910021-00, sold separately). It’s made to connect easily through hitch pin attachment points, so your tow bar locks in securely every time. Once unhooked, the removable arms store away while your vehicle keeps its original look.

Awesome delivery speed, and a well made base plate for my 2007 Element. Installation was a breeze (thanks to my son’s heated shop) and I had to do no cutting to make this fit. I had a Stowmaster tow bar that came with my RV and etrailer was able to steer me to the correct missing parts to make this a really affordable installation. Now to get out of this snow!

by:

Purchased for a 1997 Subaru Impreza. Delivery was amazingly fast! I didn't have it installed until a few months later, as my travel plans had stalled. It didn't quite bolt right on, but was close, and a friend had to modify it some to make it work. I still hear a grating noise when I turn too sharp on one side, but otherwise it's fine.
The front connection plates didn't line up with the holes, so had to have those modified, as well, in order to line up and attach to the tow bar. Once the new holes were drilled, I was able to hook up and go.
It's relatively easy to connect after finding a way to do it alone.
I've towed from CO to TX and all over TX with it with no problems.

by:

After ordering the wrong crossbar, etrailer sent the correct one for our Mini Cooper quickly. However I did have to modify most of the holes as the cross bar didn’t quite fit (but close). I had to drill the three main bolt holes to 11/16 so that the bar would go over the Mini’s 3 main bumper bolts on both sides. The two lower bolt holes (each side), needed to be drilled out 3 sizes larger to accommodate the 4 bolts that come with the kit. I had to drill out the Minis lower holes to better align with the crossbars lower holes. I would also like to note it being a pain in the knuckles to reach one of the three (each side) bolts to put the stock nuts on the bolt and then try and get them tight. (The main bolt pattern for the upper bumper is diamond shape, one up tow bolts lower. (The lower “inside” bolt on each side is the one that is hard to get to and tighten.) Sorry I didn’t get picks, I was in a rush to get the car back together. There’s an angle piece on the cross bar that blocks the hard to reach bolt, it would be helpful if that could be made more accessible to reach.

I’ve been purchasing products from ETrailer since 2005 and all the products I’ve purchased have been a great value. The products mentioned above installed perfectly and with the direct assistance from ETrailer everything fit as suggested. I will always interact with ETrailer as needs present themselves.

by:

Overall the installation was great, however the process of drilling 3 - 1/2" holes in that little bumper that has a Rockwell Hardness of about 60, seems to be a bit over the top.The instructions are spot on, delivery was great, the quality of product was accurate. I am a happy boy!

by:

Replaced same part that was damaged in a crash. I had used my original one for close to ten years without issue. Fast shipping from etrailer.

by:

The Base plate kit is well made and came with all the necessary hardware.Installation is relatively straight forward. I did have to enlarge two of the holes that didn't quite line up. But overall I'd recommend it.

by:

Bolted right up. Installation should be done with bumper on, as you can't fit the ends through the louvers without some convincing. Works great so far. Was able to use a Stowmaster 5000 with it.

by:

Installation was a bit trying. Ended up looking very clean and almost invisible.
Using the tow bar worked super easy and our motorhome hardly noticed the Mini Cooper back there.

by:

Came quickly and is very high quality. Great directions/video from road master makes the installation step by step easy to follow.
Skill level is probably at the intermediate level depending on experience.

by:

The #118-3 is a perfect fit on my 1995 Geo Tracker. When you pull off the removable arms you would never know they are there. The Quality is very good easy to put on all you have to do is drill 4 holes the tube on the base plate fits into the tube on the frame of the tracker and with the 2 bolts it is a solid fit. I was worried about the plate nut getting it inside of the frame but it went in easy when you put it over the frame tube and use a thin piece of metal to slide it in place. I’m very happy with it. I probably could of got it on without taking my bumper off but with only 4 bolts holding my bumper on it made it easier

by:

product is well constructed and finished fit with no modifications
thanks, saved me a lot of trouble trying to fabricate myself

by:

Perfect fit, easy to put on, minimum skills needed. Took 3 1/2 hours

by:

Excellent product easy to mount no fuss .

by:

Has been installed and functioning as it should for over 1 year now. Good kit.

by:

The Products, as usual, are as advertised. Customer service is, also......The problem is that I asked for and received assurance that the products would be delivered on a particular date and NOT before, because I would not be home to open the gate...(I live in the country on a remote road).......The product was delivered to my GATE (I was NOT home) and sat in the rain for several days...... poor results on that.......Maybe you will do better next time?

by:

the product came as advertised and with installation instructions that made it easy to install

by:

Haven’t installed hitch yet so this review is all about customer services.
Great help answering my stupid questions about what I needed. Completed the order and had it shipped to the garage who will install. Also sent 8-Papago color instructions for proper install.
Would recommend to anyone looking for towing connections.

by:

DIFFICULT TO INSTALLThis is an efficient and well hidden bracket unit. But, having an automotive mechanical background I found it difficult to install. It required a "C" clamp and hydraulic jack to position it so the bolt holes would line up. No mention of these procedures in the instructions. "Just lift in place and bolt it up". Not Quite.

by:

E-Trailer is prompt, helpful, and professional. Their instructions were detailed and I got the job done, but it took me about twice as long as I had anticipated (6 hours). The removal and re-attachment of various auto body parts complicated the installation, but was do-able alone.

by:

Once we got the right base plate for our car it was great! My wife and I installed the base plate on our 05 PT Cruiser and it tows great coupled to our Falcon 2 tow bar.

by:

5 star product, great fit, easy to attach tow bar, a bit of a job to install on vehicle but well worth the outcome. I'd suggest taking it to an auto body shop because the bumper needs to be removed.

  • Parts Needed For Flat Towing a 2005 PT Cruiser
According to the owners manual for the 2005 PT Cruiser it is safe to be flat towed behind an RV. They make no mention of needing to start the vehicle and let it idle for any periods of time so the transmission should self lubricate itself. I recommend using the Roadmaster Base Plate # 278-1 which I see you already found. You will need a Crossbar # 910021-00 along with a set of tow bars like the Nighthawk # RM-676. These bars are one of the most popular options with having the built in running...

  • Recommendation For Flat Towing a 2005 PT Cruiser Behind An RV
The items needed to tow your 2005 PT Cruiser will include base plates, a tow bar, safety cables, wiring, a braking system, and maybe a high-low hitch adapter. For your 2005 PT Cruiser, I recommend the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Item # 278-1 because it is designed for your vehicle. It also has twistlock brackets that are virtually invisible and can be removed. The Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain tow bar, Item # RM-522, is a great choice that fits the Roadmaster XL Base Plate. In addition to the Roadmaster Tracker # RM-020 tow bar you referenced, you will need a base plate kit, safety cables, wiring and depending on the states you will be traveling in, a supplemental braking system. The Roadmaster # 278-1, which fits all PT Cruiser models, is the base plate kit you would need. The base plates use removable draw bars that makes the base plate kit practically invisible when they are removed. Quick disconnects like part # RM-201 will also be needed. The # RM-645...

  • Can 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Automatic Transmission Be Flat Towed
Your 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser with an automatic transmission can be flat towed if you install a lube pump kit in the transmission. We do not sell these kits but we do have everything else you'd need. The other option is a tow dolly like the part # RM-2050-1 which bypasses the need for the lube pump kit, requires less install time, and is much easier transferred to future vehicles. But if you want to go with a tow bar setup you'd need to first start with a base plate kit. For that you'd...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser with Manual Transmission with Stowmaster Tow Bar
I, too, drive a manual PT Cruiser! There are 5 items needed to flat tow a vehicle: base plates, tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking. For base plates you can use # 278-1. These base plates are compatible with your Stowmaster tow bar. For safety cables I recommend # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables off of the ground. For lighting, if you will not be towing the vehicle very often, I reocmmend a magnetic light kit, # RM-2120. For a more permanent solution...

To tow a vehicle, you will need more than just the tow bar. You will also need a base plate kit. A base plate kit attaches to the vehicle frame and provides a place to the tow bar to attach. We carry one base plate kit for your PT Cruiser, RoadMaster part # 278-1. To use the Tow Ready Adjustable tow bar, you will need an adapter as the Tow Ready tow bar will not attach directly to the RoadMaster base plates available for your car. This is compatible with the 5000-pound capacity RoadMaster Tracker Tow Bar, part # RM-020. A tow bar bracket and tow bar are just two of the components required by law to safely tow your auto. If you are considering the tow dolly option, we do offer one tow dolly by Roadmaster, part # RM-2000-1. To equip your 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser to be towed with a tow bar, you will first need to install base plate kit # 278-1. You can use receiver inserts, part # RM-200-5,...
