Video Transcript for Brophy Zinc Plated E-Track Backing Plate Installation

Today we are going to be taking a look at the E-Trak Backing Plate. Part number BPEZ. As you can see, it definitely gives us more surface area under here, instead of just at each bolt location, you have got a whole plate that 4 different bolts go through here, to tie down the E-Trak. These plates are 6 inches by 6 1/2 inches and they are an eighth of an inch thick. They are zinc plated steel so that they are nice and strong, but they will also resist rust and corrosion. Depending on your application, it does have some additional holes as well, depending on how you need to mount it. These, with that extra surface area they provide, especially under things like a plywood floor here, it is going to give you that extra strength for when that 6,000 pound capacity of the E-Trak is being put into place. If it is just pulling up on single bolts that are small in diameter, they are more likely to pull through than a plate that is 6 inches by 6 1/2 inches. From the top of the E-Trak you see the heads of the bolt's here, and that is the only thing that you can see that goes through to that plate underneath.

It helps maintain a nice clean look for your E-Trak. Having those plates underneath also makes sure that that E-Trak feels nice and secure. On this 2 foot section of E-Trak right here, I have already got either end attached to the frame rail here and here. Now, take our backing plate. I am going to put two of them in, we will put one where these holes, these two outer holes line up with these two holes, on either side. Then the other one, I am going to put right here, to where these holes line up with these holes here.

Now that I know which holes I am going to use, I am going to take a drill bit and drill these out. The holes in the E-Trak itself are 1/4 inch, but the holes in the backing plate are 5/16 of an inch. Throughout this trailer we have used 5/16 inch bolts. In order to do that, what I am going to do is take my 5/16 drill bit and I am going to drill these holes out just a little bit bigger. In the process, I will also be able to drill out the hole through the plywood. Now that I have got those drilled out, I am just going to clean this us and then I will be able to put my bolts through.

Once I am all done pushing these through, we can head underneath and get ready to mount our plates up. Now that we are underneath, we can see all 8 of our bolts poking through here. I am just going to takes some of these little wood chips that we're chipping away from drilling out our holes. I will just pull them off and out of the way. With that area cleaned up, I can get ready to start putting our plates up into place. Where we have got these 4 holes in a line, those are going to be straight down the center here.

We will get these lined up. I am just going to put a lock washer and nut on one of these to start, just to help hold it up there. I have got these two coming through here, the other ones are just ever so slightly off. Now lets check the fitment on our other one here. Put my lock washer and nut on this one, it is sticking all the way through. I am just going to snug these up by hand to help hold the plate in place when we try and push those other bolts back down through. Just take a hammer and tap down. If it doesn't want to go down all the way, you can also take your 1/2 inch or 13mm socket and just kind of run it down. It should grip just enough on the sides of the bracket, the hole of the bracket underneath to pull it down through. We can get the rest of our lock washers and nuts started. Once we have got them all started, we can go around and tighten them up. These are again going to be 1/2 inch or 13mm socket on the underside here. When you are tightening these up, they don't need to be super tight, but you want to make sure that they are run down all the way, and nice and secure. If they do want to spin on you when you are getting them almost all the way tight, you can have somebody else hold a wrench on the top side at the head of the bolt while you tighten it up the rest of the way. That is going to complete our look at the E-Trak backing plate. Part number BPEZ.

The reason for the poor review is because the holes on this backing plate did not precisely match the etrailer band E-Track. Apparently, after communicating with folks at etrailer, this backing place is made to match the Erickson brand. This was not mentioned on the description when I purchased it. Essentially two of the holes had to be "modified". Doing so with hand tools was not the easiest nor prettiest of jobs; but in the end it worked. It just added hours to otherwise a straight forward process. trailer did offer to refund the cost but I used them anyway. I still believe you need a backing plate to install the E-track; you may just have to make it yourself. Also, I feel it is easier to drill fresh holes than to modified holes that are already drilled... Just sayin!

Installed the e-track on my flatbed trailer yesterday using these plates as intended. CAUTION ....... these plates DO NOT line up with the vertical e-track despite the description stating "most horizontal and vertical" e-track. It wasn't a huge issue for me only because my friend has a fully equipped workshop and garage which included a drill press. We were able to bolt them together in 3 separate stacks and drill them to accommodate the holes in the track. If you do not have that luxury then it will be quite a job, depending on how many plates you are using. In my case it was 18. Once drilled they installed easily using a 1/4" impact wrench which expedited the installation quite nicely. This is a 2 person job without a doubt. It would be very difficult for 1 person to do this on their own. My setup is used for hauling 2 motorcycles, 4 wheeler, Kubota RTV, a 15,000 watt generator, and other miscellaneous equipment (not all at the same time). I am satisfied with the product to include the e-track, as well as the customer service provided by etrailer.com. I have ordered numerous items from them over the last several years and have always had a good experience. I am attaching several photos for review. Thank you etrailer.com.

This is a great product and high quality. The only issue that I had was the holes didn't exactly match up on the EM09160 Erickson ATV E-Track Tie-Down Kit w/ Ratchet Straps and Wheel Chocks. On each plate I had to drill two holes . If it wasn't for that I would have given 5 stars

The base plates are a necessary to insure adequate support for the e-track system to transport large motorcycles. You must obtain mounting hardware since it isn't provided. I used 1/4 x 2" stainless Phillips head bolts secured with washer/lock washer, hex nut and thread locker. The plate is more than adequate in size and thickness to ensure the e-track will remain secure.

I'm very happy with the products. I had purchased from etrailer in the past and was very satisfied then, which is the reason I returned when I needed tie down equipment. I was not disappointed. The service, products and advice was great. I installed the e-tract without any difficulty. I'm also happy to say that it secured my antique fire hose cart in a manner that protected it and kept it from moving while traveling. Thanks to all. When I need anything else you can be sure I will come back.

Good item as far as construction goes, check spacing before ordering though... side to side spacing is 4-5/8" center to center as shown on the site in one place and 4-1/2" CtoC further down the page. The spacing shown for the e-track itself is 4-1/2" CtoC. The spacing on the e-track I have on hand (previous purchase elsewhere) is only 4-3/8" CtoC . Of course I got the 4-5/8" CtoC pieces so ended up having to re-drill to make them work.

Heavy gauge steel backing plate. Very cost effective option to making your own. I will be installing this in all aluminum enclosed trailer. This will add support to e track installed on floor. I haul high end sports cars and feel assured the car will remain in place by utilizing these backing plates.

Comments
thanks for following up on this. Its funny, as I was unable to use these plates on mye-track install. The bolt pattern is not the same as the e-track installed in my trailer so basically these plates are useless. I still have them and would gladly return them.

I bought backing plates for eTracks on a rebuild of my snowmobile trailer. First, I didn’t realize they existed until I was directed to them on the website. A helpful how-to video gave me some great tips on installation. I ordered on a Thursday and they arrived on Saturday, well packaged and exactly as described. I am a new customer but etrailer will be first on my list for future trailer needs.

Thanks for the follow up. I’m very satisfied with the backing plates. They installed easily and I feel they really secured my tracks to my trailer. I’m happy I got them.

Had installed e-track in a covered trailer with a wood floor using large washers on the bottom side. Someone wanted to borrow the trailer to haul a motorcycle, I worried about the washers pulling through in the worst case. Found the backing plate on etrailer, ordered them, and installed them. The e-track is very solid now and would have no concern about their staying in place. The plates were heavy duty and fit perfectly with the e-track. A very good product that gives one piece of mind when tying down a heavy object in a trailer.

I was more than impressed with the service I had received - not only was everything processed ahead of schedule but shipped ahead of schedule and I was upgraded to expedited shipping at no cost to me! Package was received 3days earlier due to all of their attention to service - not to mention well packaged and in great condition. The product was a perfect answer to mounting my Etrack to the underside of my wood floor and provide a secure sandwich to mount my motorcycle wheel chock and tie downs - now I don't have to worry.

still working great - I used it to attach my track to the floor. I would still recommend this product to anyone. Thank you for your follow up!

Excellent customer service. Received expedited shipping services at no extra cost. I have E-track from two different sources, the backing plate fits only one. Before you order I suggest that you measure your E-track to make sure that the mounting holes will align with the holes on the backing plate. I have a drill press so I drilled additional or enlarged existing holes as required.

I hesitated to buy the anchor plates at first, thinking I could do it cheaper on my own. I'm glad I went against my own instincts as it clearly saved me time and money...not to mention getting the security my tiedowns needed for frequent hauling.

I ordered the E track system with backer plates, end caps, and 4K tie off rings. What a great system. I Picked up some grade 8 bolts at the Hardware and installed the system over a weekend. Delivery was smooth, install was easy. I hauled my 4 wheeler, and lawn equipment up to our deer camp last weekend with it and the E track made it extremely easy to tie everything down. Thanks Etrailer!!!!

For 10 feet of track I recommend using at least 4 of the E-Track Backing Plate # BPEZ. Put one at each end and two evenly spaced to the the middle. If you will be securing larger loads, then you will want to use more. The flooring already present in your trailer will make a big difference as to how many you may choose to use as well. You're on the right track- the Brophy E-Track Backing Plate # BPEZ is what you'll want to use as a support plate under your E-track system like the Brophy # ET05 or Erickson # E19135. You'll want to use a backing plate at each end of the track and in the middle for the maximum support. Additionally, if the underside of your trailer is aluminum, you'll want to use a coat of paint or some other sort of insulating material to prevent galvanic corrosion between the two metals.

  • How Many Backing Plates Should be Used to Secure an 8 Foot Length of E-Track
It really depends. At the very least I would say that you would need 3 backing plates # BPEZ per E-Track section; one at each end and one in the middle. Five spaced evenly apart would probably be better. When attaching things to the E-track I recommend securing them at the locations along the track that are attached to the backing plates because that is where it would be the strongest. As far as how many fasteners to use Erickson says to use 2 per linear foot of track.

Depending on the thickness of your pressure treated floor would determine if I'd use 2 or 3. If it is a sturdy floor, you can use 2 with one on each end. If you want maximum support, I'd use 3 and put one in the center of the track as well.
