Updated 11/26/2024 | Published 11/24/2024

Question:

Second time I’ve had to replace axles and need advice please. I would like to upgrade my trailer axles to at least 5000 axles. Don’t really know where to start but this is the trailer. 2017 Jayco Whitehawk 27DSRL Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Ken Chamberlain

Hello Ken, thanks for reaching out. The first thing we will need to look at here is the length of your current axle. Axles are measured across from hub-face to hub-face, and we will need to be sure the new axle is identical in length to the current axle. There is no way to look this up using the make and model or trailer, so your best bet will be to get under the trailer and measure. Or there should be a sticker on the axle tube that shows the weight capacity, spring center length and hub face length. I will also need to know if your axle is a round tube leaf spring axle or a torsion axle. If you can provide me with that info I am happy to look into it and see if we have anything for you.

79” hub face to hub face. Round tubes. I had my original axles replaced in Yukon Territories in Whitehorse on our Alaska trip. The shop made axles from scratch so there are no stickers on these axles. I do have pictures if that helps? Ken Chamberlain

@KenC So I will tell you up front that we do not offer any axles with a 79" hub face. It can be tricky to identify a homemade axle just from a picture. Knowing the length helps a lot. You will just need to find a 79" HF axle rated for 5,000 lbs. If I were you, I would reach out to an axle manufacturer like Dexter to see if they offer something that could work for you. Otherwise our only potential option is something like the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension # TASR5200S03.

@KenC Ah ok great because we do offer a few options for an 89" HF axle. If you are wanting to upgrade, the Trailer Axle Beam with Easy Grease Spindles # e55GR is a good option. It is 89" long and rated for 5,200 lbs. The spring centers are at 74" so if this does not match up with your current axle they will need to be removed and relocated. We also offer this axle fully loaded with disc brakes as part # e75SR. Also note that if you are upgrading your axle capacity you will probably want to upgrade your leaf springs as well. Leaf springs are best measured unloaded and they are measured across from center eye to center eye. Let me know that measurement and I can see if we have anything for you. Also note that just because leaf springs and axles are upgraded this does not necessarily mean the capacity of the trailer will increase. Stuff like the frame, tongue or coupler are not being upgraded so just use caution not to overload things.
