When it comes to installing an aftermarket transmission cooler you will want to choose the largest and highest rated transmission cooler that will fit on your 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD 6.0L because transmission fluid cannot be over cooled. Aftermarket transmission coolers are supplemental coolers and are designed to be install in-line with your factory transmission coolers return line.
Transmission coolers with fans like the Derale 16-Pass Electra-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler With Fan, # D15900, are typically used if airflow is limited. These transmission coolers can be mounted anywhere there is room. The installation can be a bit more involved because of the wiring and finding a proper mounting location where you can still run hoses to the transmission return line.
For your truck, I would recommend the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit, # D13504. The size and capacity of this cooler will be ideal when towing your 30 ft travel trailer and it is going to be more cost effective than a remote cooler. The best mounting location for this cooler to maximize efficiency is in front of your AC condenser or your radiator.
This cooler includes a universal adapter fitting, but if you would like a vehicle specific fitting you can use the Derale Snap-In Adapter Fitting for GM, # D13035. You could also use compression fittings if it is easier for you to just cut the transmission line.
I would recommend measuring the diameter of your transmission line going to the radiator and match that up with the proper compression fittings. The most common size is 3/8 inches, but it would be safe to measure first. I have attached links to the compression fittings that we carry, part # D13031, D13032, D13033.
I have attached two help articles on transmission coolers for you to look over, as well as an installation video of a transmission cooler. The vehicle in the video is different from yours, but the installation process will be similar to yours and it should give you an idea on what to expect.
