Is Silicone Sealant Required When Installing New Seal on Trailer Hub
Question:
My Dexter owners manual says to put some Permatex sealant on the outside of the seal before installing. Is this really necessary? Thanks

I believe you are referring to the manual for various Dexter hub assemblies that call for the application of Permatex sealant or equivalent prior to the installation of a new seal. While I don't recommend going against the manufacturer's suggestion, we have never really seen the need for applying an additional sealant or gasket maker when installing a grease seal like the part # RG06-050 you were looking at. The new seal will perform just fine without one.
With that being said a sealant certainly wouldn't hurt, either. If you decide to apply one a good equivalent to the Permatex is the Loctite RTV 598 # LT37467.
