I looked at the owner's manual for your 2018 Chevrolet Malibu and it states that the trailer should never be heavier than 1,000 pounds. It goes into more detail that other factors can influence the capacity (such as speed, altitude, temperature, and others) and that you should contact GM for specific information. Long story short the absolute maximum capacity of your Malibu is no more than 1,000 pounds for sure.
With that being said, we do have the parts you need to get the Malibu set up to tow. The trailer hitch confirmed to fit is the Draw-Tite # 36652. I like how the cross tube is completely hidden behind the rear bumper and all you see is the receiver opening. It's a nice clean design. I've attached a picture of it installed as well as a video from when we installed it on a 2017 Malibu. The process is the same on your 2018. The install details are linked too.
The recommended ball mount with the hitch is part # 36071 and the correct hitch ball is either # 19258 for a 2 inch ball or # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch ball. For a pin and clip use # PC2.
You also need a wiring harness to power the trailer's lights. If your Malibu is a Premier model the part is # C56313. If you have any other model use part # C56387. They both plug into a connector behind some interior lining in the trunk.
In addition to the parts I've also linked some review videos and help articles. Take a look because they could be helpful with additional information and installation.
