Troubleshooting Slight Amount of Grease Leaking from E-Z Lube Spindle
Question:
Just installed new axle/E-Z Lube spindle in January 2018. Soon after first grease service of this trailer axle and traveling to and from transporting boat from lake and home I noticed some signs of grease on inside of trailer wheel. Not much grease maybe total of a tablespoon full. Im thinking it maybe due to over filling spindle. I thought that overfilling was not supposed to occur? I called the installer of this axle who told me that was normal. I cleaned off the wheel again and after towing trailer several miles and returning home I checked wheel for signs of grease and there was some there.

Any grease on the back of the wheel could be from the grease working its way out from having slightly too much or it could be from a grease cap or grease seal that is not fitting properly. The grease cap and seal should be keeping any excessive grease off the wheel unless the parts are failing. I recommend pulling the rubber plug to see if there is grease inside and if so just clean the wheel and keep your eye on it for more. If it keeps happening, something is not working correctly most likely the grease seal. Another possibility is the grease zerk is loose.
The Bearing Buddies are the spring loaded caps that should not have any leaking, the spindles should disperse grease in the same way as a regular spindle, they just are easier to add grease to the bearings due to the integrated zerk fitting.
