We offer several brands of 2-inch Class III hitches for your 1998 Ford Explorer 2-Door and these are offered with several different tongue weight and gross trailer weight ratings. The link at right will let you see all Class III hitches for your Explorer, including the Curt # 13540.
None of these require drilling for installation and many still allow for re-installation of a full-size spare tire after the hitch is in place.
Of all hitches offered I suggest the Curt # C13106 since it has the highest capacity available, 500-lbs tongue weight and 5000-lbs gross trailer weight and still lets a full-size spare remain. You will want to check your vehicle owner's manual to confirm the truck's ratings, which could differ from the hitch. The lowest-rated item determines the overall system capacity.
You may want to consider the etrailer ball mount kit # 989900 for a handy all-inclusive kit with two ball mounts, two hitch balls and the required pin and clip. If you prefer a ball mount with different rise or drop we offer them individually; you can use the link provided at right to see all 2-inch Class III ball mounts.
For a trailer wiring harness you can use Curt # C55345 for which the instructions are linked.
