Question:

I have a 2014 Subaru Forester and I cant wait to get it in the snow. In order to access places like Mt. Rainier National Park in the winter and to have a little peace of mind during winter bird photography trips I need to purchase a set of tire chains. The manual recommends against the use of chains, but says that if they must be used to purchase Class S chains. I am trying to decide between Thule Tire Chains - TH2004205104 and Thule Tire Chains - TH01221104. I like that the TH01221104 can be used on and off road. But I am leaning toward the TH2004205104 since they offer more clearance, rim protection, and sound like they may be easier to use. My concern is that they are rated for on road use only. So my question is, what are the off-road limitations of the TH2004205104? Would they be OK to use on a snow-covered dirt road? Chains may be also necessary for snow-covered gravel parking areas. I dont yet know how much off-road snow driving I might want to do, but it would be nice to have the option. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks so much!

Both the Thule snow chains # TH2004205104 and # TH01221104 are Class S compatible so they will work in that regard. The S rating means they have a very low amount of clearance required to clear you steering and suspension components on your vehicle.

I am not sure why one is listed as off-and on-road while the other is only on-road. Both chains use the same D link style of chain that would work well for you in either situation.

The # TH2004205104 will install much easier so I would recommend it for you, I recently had the chance to install both of the styles of chains you referenced and these were pretty easy to install and still at a great price so they are in my opinion the best all around buy. For what you are looking to do these chains should do great.
