Placing Pivot Arms on B&W Companion Hitch in Furthermost Position for Short Bed Truck
Updated 09/22/2014 | Published 09/20/2014 >
Question:
Hi...I had a BandW Companion installed the other day in a 2014 F250 short bed. To get the most clearance for the fifth wheel cap, the installer placed the pivot arms in the furthermost position. This puts the pin behind the axle about 7 inches. I was always under the impression the pin should be right above the axle or even slightly forward. The installer says the way it is now will not be a problem. Any thoughts on this?

I spoke with my contact at B&W and ideally you do want the king pin to sit centered above the rear axle or slightly forward but in order to increase the turning clearance on your 2014 Ford F-250, your installer was correct in placing a B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch like # BWRVK3400-5W in the furthermost position.
According to installation instructions, the position of the pivot arm allows the kingpin to adjust from 1 inch ahead of the post to 7 inches behind the post. Please keep in mind that the further you shift the kingpin behind the post, the comfort of the ride will be decreased..
