Expert Reply:
The Curt wiring harness # C56175 that you referenced is a fit for the 1997 Mazda Miata so long as your Miata does not have LED taillights. Given the model year of the vehicle it likely uses standard incandescent bulbs which are compatible with this trailer wiring harness. This kit includes zip ties and quick-splice connectors.
Wiring is best done with a tester like # PTW2992 to enable you to confirm the function carried by each wire on the Miata. Wire colors cannot be relied upon for identifying the function carried. A tester will ensure you make the correct connections as described in the linked instructions. A video is also provided to show the use of the tester and a troubleshooting article is also provided in case you run into any issues.
Before towing I suggest you consult your owner's manual (and check your hitch) for the capacities for each, which may be different. The linked article on towing will give you some helpful basics for towing a trailer.
