Protecting Tires on Boat Trailer During Long Term Storage

Question:

Hi- A new boater at the time, I had stored my 1999 EZ-Loader tandem trailer Boat is 21 foot, 550 lb tongue weight- Boat is on a rack in a Boat-el in a field for as long as 10 years before moving very little, now and then. When I needed it, I needed to practically replace everything- surge breaks, tires. Older and wiser, should I elevate/cover the tires to preserve them? If so, what is best way/jack type you sell to elevate all 4 tires for long storage? Or is simply taking it for a ride empty once a month better? Thanks

The best way to preserve your tires is to put the trailer up on jack stands, partially deflate the tires and protect them from UV rays. I'd recommend using covers to protect your tires form the sunlight. I'll link you to our selection of tire covers.

As a general rule of thumb, trailer tires should be replaced every 6 to 8 years regardless of wear. Even though an older tire might appear to have plenty of tread left on it, dry rot and cracking can cause tire failure.
