Will Upgrading From a 45 Amp to 60 Amp RV Converter Require Rewiring

Updated 10/20/2026 | Published 10/18/2026

Question:

I currently have a 2017 Winnebago View with a progressive dynamics PD 9245C converter. I think it would be a direct swap for the PD 9345 but I’m wondering if I can go to the PD 9360 without swapping wires for a larger gauge

Hey Timothy, welcome back! Yes, the Progressive Dynamics 9300 Series Converter # PD69RR (PD9345) is a direct replacement for your existing PD9245C. You can also upgrade to the 60-amp # PD79RR (PD9360), but more than likely you'll need to upgrade your wiring as well. I would expect Winnebago used wiring sized for the original 45-amp converter.

You'll need to verify your existing wire gauge and compare it to Progressive Dynamics' recommendations for the 60-amp converter. They recommend 6 AWG for runs under 10', 4 AWG for 10' to 15', and 3 AWG for runs over 15'. If your existing wiring meets these requirements, you won't need to replace it. Otherwise, I'd stick with the 45-amp # PD69RR unless you want to run new wiring.

Are you upgrading to lithium batteries or just looking for faster charging?

The converter on your View feeds the DC bus bar which has a 40A breaker. It is possible the 60A converter will trip that breaker under maximum charging. Even after line loss, you will be exceeding 40A.

@BobS thanks for pointing that out! That's another important consideration when upgrading to the 60A converter. Timothy will need to verify the breaker rating along with the wiring before making the switch.

Our converter was very much outdated. I called Progressive Dynamics and asked if I could move up to a 60 or 75 amp converter. They strongly recommended to stay with the 9345 because of the 8 guage wiring in our 5th wheel. So far it’s working great. Our wet cell batteries are staying charged without boiling. Stay with the size your rv came with and enjoy and get out and enjoy what you have.

@Dan thanks for sharing your experience! Sticking with the original converter capacity is usually the simplest option and can save a lot of headaches with wiring upgrades unless the additional charging capacity is really needed. Glad to hear the new converter is working well for you!
