Can I Still Use the Hands-Fre Lift Gate Feature with a Trailer Hitch on a 2023 Honda CR-V?

Updated 10/14/2026 | Published 10/11/2026

Question:

I assume adding a hitch to my CRV will cover the foot sensor for the easy open lift gate opening? Also…for the wiring harness is there a way to connect it outside or is the best way to connect it inside and run the wires out for when it’s being used? Thanks!

Hi Eric,

For the lift gate sensor, what we usually see is that the trailer hitch only blocks the sensor where the trailer hitch receiver tube is directly under it. If you kick your foot to either side of the hitch receiver, the hands-free lift gate sensor will still work. The etrailer Trailer Hitch part # e98848 has an installation note mentioning this same thing, as do all the other trailer hitches for your vehicle.

For the wiring harness, like the Curt T-Connector Wiring Harness w/4-pole Flat part # C56370, it would be easiest to leave the wiring inside and tuck it under the mat when not in use. It would also protect the wiring and plug from any corrosion from the elements. If you do want to run it under the vehicle, you'll need to look down the driver's side rear floor pan area near the spare tire/wheel well. There is a rubber grommet there that you can pop out, push the 4-pole plug through, and then reinstall the grommet. You'll need to cut the rubber grommet so it can snap back into the wire loom.

What are you planning on using the trailer hitch for?
