Can I Cut Off Connector Of Old Tekonsha Brake Controller And Wire In New Curt TrFlex NEXT Controller

Updated 10/07/2026 | Published 10/05/2026

Question:

Hi. I have a 1994 Chevrolet c1500 truck that used a TEKONSHA i-Stop IQ brake controller. That controller has failed so Im looking for a replacement. This controller has 4 wires to connect to the truck. I think I can substitute a C67PQ controller offered by etrailer by simply connecting the controller wires to the truck wires. Of course Id cut off the plug since there is no harnessinch in this old truck. Would you agree the C67PQ and my plans for wiring would be an acceptable plan? Do you have any other recommendations? Thank you, Charlie

Hey Charlie,

Yes, the Curt TriFlex NEXT Brake Controller # C67PQ will work as a replacement for your old Tekonsha controller. Since your 1994 Chevy C1500 doesn't use a plug-in brake controller harness, you can simply cut the plug off the Curt harness and hardwire it to the existing brake controller wiring as you mentioned.

Brake controllers use the same four basic wire functions:

Black – 12V power

White – ground

Red – brake light switch signal

Blue – brake output to the trailer brakes

I would recommend connecting by wire function rather than assuming the truck's existing wire colors are correct, but you can also just trace them by hand and wire them that way. If you're unsure about any of the old wiring, use a multimeter or circuit tester to verify each circuit before making the connections. The red brake signal wire should only have power when the brake pedal is pressed.

As long as those four circuits are present and working properly, the # C67PQ will be a straightforward replacement. I attached an installation video of it getting hard wired in a different vehicle which will be a similar process.

What do you plan to tow with it?
