Adding Hitch, 7 Way Wiring, and Brake Controller To 2019 Chevy Express 3500 With No Tow Package

Published 09/23/2026

Question:

I have a 2019 Chevy Express 3500 with no tow package. I need to add a wiring harness for the trailer to tow a trailer with a 7 pin connector. What are my best options for this?

Hey Chad, we have exactly what you need!

For the hitch, it depends if you have the van, or if you have the cutaway cab and chassis. If the van, go with etrailer 2" receiver # e98861. I like the matte finish which blends in and looks OEM. If you instead have the cutaway cab and chassis, go with the Buyers 2" receiver # 3371801102 as that is the only option right now.

For wiring, you'll want the custom-fit plug and play 4 way flat # 55540. This gives you the trailer light circuits. Then you'll convert it to the 7 way round / 4 way combo with this kit # ETBC7. You'll then have a 7 way setup that is compatible with trailers that have the 7 way round plug.

That said, if you have trailer brakes, then you'll also need a brake controller. That is the last piece of the puzzle. For that, I'd go with the trusty Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Universal Wiring Harness - Dash Knob # RED52VR. This is a really simple setup that hard wires into the # ETBC7 kit and your factory brake wire for brake signal.

I know I threw a lot at you, but it's not too difficult once you dig into it. I'm here to help if you need more assistance!
What are you planning to tow with the van?
