How to Power Ford F-250 Topper Lights Without Triggering Factory Trailer Detection

Updated 09/22/2026 | Published 09/17/2026

Question:

Random question. So I have a Ford F-250. This is a 2024, and when I plug in my seven-pin connector that connects to my truck topper, which just has lights, the seven-pin in the bed of my Ford truck thinks Im pulling a fifth wheel, so it wont let me use lane centering and it makes it so my mirrors dont have the lights in them when the car is beside me. Do you all have any answers or ways to fix that?

Hi Prescott! The problem is that your F-250 sees the connection at the factory 7-way and assumes you have a trailer connected because of the power draw from the truck topper. I recommend bypassing the factory trailer wiring altogether and using the Curt T-Connector # C58044.

The # C58044 taps directly into the truck's taillight circuits and gives you a separate 4-way you can use to power the lights on your topper. This keeps the topper disconnected from the factory trailer wiring so the truck shouldn't detect it as a trailer and disable your lane centering and blind spot features.

What kind of connector does your topper currently have on it?

Robin is probably right, the BCM probably needs to be fooled! My 2012 Jeep did not have that particular issue.

@MatthewB definitely! Having a slightly older vehicle has its advantages sometimes. All of the computers and integrated features on newer trucks can make something this simple a hassle.
