Replacement Options for Discontinued UFP Gold Series Oil Hubs

Updated 09/18/2026 | Published 09/16/2026

Question:

I have a 2006 Triton TRX21 that has the oil hubs, I have one that is sipping all the time and looking at what would be the best way. So if I went with the Buddy Bearing I see that it presses into the hub I have ? and will the Kodiak XL cap Im guessing will replace the UFP Gold series ? I cannot seem to find that UFP, looks like its gone to Vault with the hybrid oil/grease.

Hey Tommy, thanks for reaching out. You’re on the right track here. The original UFP Gold Series oil-bath protectors were discontinued by Dexter, so finding a direct UFP replacement is tough. Dexter’s official recommendation when the Gold protector needs replacement is actually to convert the hub to a Trailer Buddy stainless-steel bearing protector and NLGI #2 grease. The original Gold Series hubs are compatible with grease, but you need to clean everything, inspect the bearings and spindle, install a new inner seal, and completely repack the bearings and hub before installing the protector.

If your hub bore measures 1.98", you have two good routes. A Bearing Buddy 1980 # BB1980A-SS presses into the existing hub, but that means converting from oil to grease. If you want to stay with an oil-bath setup, the Kodiak XL ProLube # XLPROLUBE1980 also fits a 1.98" UFP Gold Series hub and replaces the old oil-bath protector while letting you continue running oil. I would not automatically convert it to the Vault system just because that replaced Gold in later UFP applications; Vault uses its own pressurized protector and proprietary hybrid lubricant.

First thing I’d do is measure the hub bore where the existing Gold protector presses in. If you get 1.98", I can point you to the exact parts for either the grease or oil-bath route.

Were you wanting to stick with oil bath, or are you open to switching to grease?

Thanks for the great info. At this point I will prob go with the grease on the back axle, once I get a chance to pull it I’ll get with you on the size. Thanks again
