Can You Use 8,000 lb Leaf Springs On A 7,000 lb Axle?

Question:
I have 2 Dexter 9625074 7000 lb axles on a 2021 Grand Design 351m. I need 8000 lb capacity. Is it advisable to use the 8000 lb springs on the 7000 lb axle? Or, do need to replace the axle as well. I emailed a week or so ago inquiring whether you sell the 8000 lb axles. Thanks

Hey Kevin, welcome back! It is possible to use an 8,000 lb spring on a 7,000 lb axle, but this wouldn't necessarily increase the weight capacity of the trailer. The springs may be rated for 8K, but things like the axles, brakes, hubs, trailer frame, coupler ect... are still rated for 7K, and your trailer is only as strong as its weakest component.
It isn't uncommon for people to use leaf springs that are rated higher than the axle itself. A lot of people do this if they are having issues with springs excessively flexing or breaking. It's a good way to give yourself a bit of a safety net for the springs, but the weight carrying capacity of the trailer itself is not increased.
That said, if you are wanting to pick up some 8K springs, we do carry those. I'll just need to know the eye-to-eye length of the current springs. It's best to jack up one side of the trailer so you can measure the spring without a load.
For example, the 7-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 8,000-lb Trailer Axles # e89FV is 24-7/8" long overall. We will want to be sure this matches the springs currently on the axle.
What is the length of the current springs?

Thank you for the response. Grand Design should have made the 8000 lb axles standard on these heavy trailers. It is my understanding that it was an option and the frames are the same. I've also reached to Grand Design for their input.
