Will the 5-3/4" Equalizer Dexter Heavy-Duty Suspension Kit Work in Place of My 7-3/4" Equalizer?

Updated 09/14/2026 | Published 09/04/2026

Question:

I just purchased the Dexter Heavy-Duty Suspension Kit for Tandem-Axle Trailers - 1-3/4 Wide Double Eye Springs. The equalizer is different from my current install. My old ones have a 7 3/4 bolt dimension. Will thie one in this kit work for my application?

Hello David,

Thanks for reaching out!

No, if your current equalizer measures 7-3/4" between the lower bolt holes, I would not use the equalizers that came with the Dexter # K71-359-00. Those are only 5-3/4", so that is too much of a difference from what you have now.

When it comes to trailer suspension, you will want to match what is already on your trailer as closely as possible. I know you will see axle spacing listed with some of our kits, but I would not go by that. There really isn't a standard when it comes to trailer suspension, so the measurements of your existing parts are what I trust.

Take a look at the Dexter Heavy-Duty Suspension Kit # K71-449-00 instead. This one has the 7-3/4" equalizer that matches what you have now. I attached an image of all the dimensions.

What kind of trailer are you working on?

I cut everything off and didn't use the Dexter. I rebuilt the enter system. Tried to match existing throughput rebuild!

@TroyD Thanks for the response Troy. Yes, if your suspension is laid out correctly, matching your existing parts is the way to go!
