Fender Option for Upgrading Malone EcoLight Trailer to 12" Wheels

Updated 09/02/2026 | Published 08/29/2026

Question:

I have the Malone MPG586XB EcoLight 1 Kayak Trailer. I am looking for replacement fenders since I change my wheels and tires from a 4.80-8 to a 4.80-12. Looking to see what you have available as afar as replacement fenders or gender risers Thank you Mike

Hey Mike!

Since you upgraded your Malone EcoLight MPG586XB from the original 4.80-8 tires to 4.80-12 tires, the original fenders will sit too close to the larger tires. A 4.80-12 tire is about 20.7" in diameter compared to roughly 16" for the original 4.80-8 tire, so you would need to either relocate the existing fenders higher or replace them with fenders designed for 12" wheels. Typicallly, you want around 3" of clearance between the top of the tire and the underside of the fender.

We don't have a Malone-specific fender riser kit for the EcoLight, but the CE Smith Single Axle Trailer Fender # CE17701G would be a good universal replacement. It's made from pre-galvanized 16-gauge steel, is designed for 12" wheels, and measure 23-1/2" long x 7" wide x 6-1/2" tall. Since your EcoLight trailer also uses a galvanized steel frame, this would be a good material match for the trailer.

The fender comes without pre-drilled mounting holes, so you would have some flexibility in adapting it to the Malone's existing mounting setup. Some fabrication or custom brackets will likely still be needed since it isn't a direct Malone replacement.

If you'd rather keep your original Malone fenders, fabricating riser brackets to move them higher above the 12" tires would also be an option.

Could you send me the length and width of your current fenders, along with a picture of how they're mounted? That would help determine whether the # CE17701G can be adapted cleanly.
