Will The Curt A20 Hear Unit C16540 Work With Curt Q20 Legs?

Updated 08/30/2026 | Published 08/27/2026

Question:

Hi, I have a 2017 Ram 3500 Dually. It has the Mopar M20 Factory puck system. The hitch head is a Q20. Will the C16540 Hitch head fit these legs. I cannot find a part number on the legs anywhere. It does have the 8holes 4 on each side to bolt the head on. Also are these legs rated for 20k or 25k. Thanks for your Help ! Roger Long time etrailer customer

Hey Roger, thanks for reaching out. The # C16540 head unit is for the Curt A20 5th wheel hitch. It sounds like your hitch legs are for a Q20 series hitch, and unfortunately, the A20 head unit will not be compatible with the Q20 legs. They use a different mounting spacing.

If you need to use your Q20 hitch head with the factory puck system in your Ram truck, you will need the following legs:

- Q Hitch OEM 5th Wheel Hitch Legs for Ram Towing Prep Package - 25,000 lbs # e56PR

These will be directly compatible with a Q20 head unit, and the legs will drop right in to the puck system in your truck.

What 5th wheel are you towing?

I have both the A20 and Q20 head units. I do not have the A20 or Q20 base. I do have the R20 slider base. I used these systems in my Ram 2500 with factory puck system. Both the A20 and Q20 bolt directly to the R20 slider base and use the same mounting holes. This leads me to believe that any base that will fit one head unit will fit the other. The only issue with compatibility I ever ran in to is that the Q20 head unit is not compatible with the Lippert Roto Flex king pin. I took pictures of both units but don't see any way for me to post them with this comment. Additionally, your existing legs are rated for 20k as are the A20 and Q20 head units.

@WarrenV I think the a20 head will fit, but without the measurements of the bolt holes I am not sure. I cant understand why there is not a part number on the legs that I have. The reply from etrailer is a little confusing. Thanks Roger

@Roger Hi Roger, I've taken measurements of both the A20 and Q20 head units. The A20 has several holes available to use, including a set of holes about six inches apart - the same spacing as the Q20 head unit. I understand you already have a Q20 5th wheel hitch supplied by Ram and you want to change to the A20 head and reuse your Q20 legs/base. Etrailer doesn't appear to carry a base for the Q20 that is rated for 20k pounds, The base they list for the Q20 is rated at 25k pounds. This may be the base you already have. If so, it is rated higher than the base etrailer lists for the A20 head. When I look at the Q20 base on etrailer, it lists several heads it is compatible with - the A20 head is not one of them. When I look at the A20 base on etrailer, the only head it lists as compatible is the A20 head - no others. Oddly, the Q20 legs etrailer sells lists the Curt A25 as compatible. Since you have a dually you might consider going with the A25 head rather than the A20 head. This will give you more weight capacity (future proof) and fall in line with the compatibility guidelines published by etrailer. Warren
