Mounting a Roof Vent with Fan on a Vertical Wall

Updated 08/28/2026 | Published 08/20/2026

Question:

Can I mount one of these on side wall of enclosed cargo trailer to suck air into trailer and well as one on roof to exhaust?

Thanks for letting us help Will. While there's nothing that specifically prevents you from installing a powered roof vent like the MaxxFan Mini Plus # MA00-03801 on a vertical wall, these vents are designed primarily for roof installations. Because of that, I'd be concerned about water intrusion over time, especially since the exterior lid and flange are designed with a horizontal installation in mind. The # MA00-03801 also requires a mounting surface at least 1 inch thick. The same requirement would apply if you mounted it vertically. Depending on your trailer's wall construction, you may need to build out the opening to achieve the necessary thickness and add reinforcement to properly support the weight of the fan.

I think a better solution would be to install wall vents like # HMAV2-AVT2, which are specifically designed for enclosed trailer walls and require much less modification. You could then add a powered vent to the roof to create airflow through the trailer.
For the roof, I'd recommend the MaxxFan Plus Roof Vent # MA00-04002K. It's reversible, so you can use it to either exhaust hot air from the trailer or pull fresh air inside. If you don't need the reversible feature, the MaxxFan Mini Plus # MA00-03801 would also be a good roof-mounted option.

For either roof vent, you'll need the Roof Vent Installation Kit # 344270KITW, which includes the butyl tape and self-leveling sealant needed to properly seal the installation. For the wall vents, you'll want a non-sag sealant such as the LaSalle Bristol XTRM Universal Non-Sag Sealant # 344270341437-1.

What are you normally hauling in your enclosed trailer?
