What Coupler Can I Replace a Ram A-frame Coupler with on an Aluminum ALCOM Trailer?
Updated 08/17/2026 | Published 08/11/2026 >
Question:
I have a 6x12 Aluminum Dump Trailer made by ALCOM branded by Mission Trailers that is like new. I love the trailer, but I am not a fan of the stamped RAM A-frame coupler, just do not trust it, I believe to a modified CA-5400. The current hitch is mounted with 4 1/2 x 7 in, grade 8 bolts, that go down through the top of the coupler, through the 2x6 inch aluminum frame member and Not through the side of the frame member. What would you recommend as a top of the line replacement coupler? I can drill matching holes in the new coupler you recommend, as long as I can still maintain the original minimum rating of 14,000 LBS. Thank You

Hi George,
The Gen-Y Hitch Trailer Coupler - A Frame Mount w/SnapLatch Part # GY67JV is a good option to replace your Ram A-frame coupler since it also mounts using vertical mounting holes. It's best to replace the Ram coupler with a coupler that has vertical mounting holes versus horizontal since the original design of your trailer is based around the coupler being mounted with vertical holes. The mounting pattern for the GY67JV is 3" from center to center and has a mounting hole diameter of 5/8". This is a standard A-frame pattern so hopefully you won't have to drill any holes, but you can measure your current mounting pattern to check.
The one thing we'll need to be aware of is galvanic corrosion since the Gen-Y coupler is steel and your trailer frame is aluminum. When dissimilar metals—steel and aluminum—are in electrical contact and moisture or road salt is present, the aluminum can corrode. The coupler is powder coated which will help a bit, but ideally a nonconductive gasket/barrier material or an appropriate corrosion-inhibiting compound can help. I'd also protect freshly drilled aluminum surfaces and pay particular attention to the fasteners, since they create direct metal-to-metal contact. Before installing anything between the coupler and frame though, I suggest reaching out the ALCOM to make sure adding something like that is safe for the trailer and won't affect how the coupler attaches to the frame.
What do you usually haul with your ALCOM dump trailer?
