RockyMounts HighNoon FC Solo Cable Lock and Hitch Movement Explained

Question:
Why is it recommended that you dont travel with your bike locked to the rack? I have the highnoon solo rack. Also ,should there be play between the rack and the hitch?

Hi Jeff! great question.
According to RockyMounts, they recommend not leaving the integrated cable lock attached to your bike while you’re driving with the HighNoon FC Solo part # RKY87RR. I’ll admit, it feels a little counterintuitive since the cable is right there on the rack, but RockyMounts intends it to be used as a theft deterrent when you’re parked. Their concern is that the cable can move around while you’re driving and rub against your bike, potentially marking up the frame, wheels, or finish. So for travel, I’d follow RockyMounts’ recommendation and let the ratcheting arm and wheel straps do the job of securing the bike.
As for the hitch connection, a little movement in a bike rack isn’t unusual, but once you tighten the HighNoon’s anti wobble system, it should take most of the play out between the rack and receiver. Hand-thread it first, wiggle the rack to align the internal thread, and firmly tighten it down with a wrench until all base movement stops. You’ll probably still see some natural movement from the rack and bike over bumps, but it shouldn’t feel loose at the hitch.
Are you seeing quite a bit of movement back there while driving, or did you just notice some play when you grabbed the rack and gave it a shake?

Jeff I have not used the lock while driving only when parked. Not sure if it would damage my frame but it made set to me so I have only used the lock while parked during transit. The wiggle also makes sense as a tight fit would make. Mounting the rake very difficult. It has never loosened while I was driving.
