Recommended Hardware to Install the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch DL148

Updated 08/02/2026 | Published 07/27/2026

Question:

I have a DL14825 winch on the way, and would like to know what size bolts you recommend to attach it to the trailer, and whether they should be galvanized or stainless steel. I use the boat mostly in the Chesapeake Bay. Thanks, MK

Hey Michael. You should use Grade 8 galvanized or zinc-plated steel hardware rather than standard stainless steel when installing the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch item # DL14825. The winch is rated for up to 2,500 lbs and stainless steel hardware can bend or shear under that heavy of a load. You'll need three 1/2" bolts, nuts, flat washers, and lock washers. The length of the bolts will depend on how thick your trailer's deck is.

What kind of boat do you have and what do you use it for?
