Recommended Brake Controller for a 1997 Ford Explorer

Question:

Hello, I have a 1997 Ford explorer that I’m looking to install a trailer brake control system on. I already have the 7-way and everything all pre wired and all that’s left is to install the controller. I’m aware that these older cars don’t have a plug and play which is fine as I’m hardwiring everything. I see a lot of the controllers are vehicle specific, but since it’s hardwired does it matter which one I get? I prefer curt products, so would any proportional controller work? Thank you!

Hey Dalton, welcome back! To add a brake controller to your 1997 Ford Explorer, I recommend the Curt TriFlex NEXT item # C24VV and the Universal Wiring Adapter for Curt Trailer Brake Controllers item # C51515. You're correct on it not mattering which brake controller you install since you have to hardwire wire it in.

The Curt TriFlex NEXT item # C24VV is a proportional brake controller that slows or stops your trailer with the same amount of force you're using to slow or stop your Explorer. This is the safest and preferred way because it's instantaneous and is easiest on your SUV and trailer's frame.

The Universal Wiring Adapter item # C51515 is going to plug directly into the brake controller. It's what you'll need to splice into your Explorer's wiring. The blue wire on it is going to connect to the blue wire on the Universal Wiring Harness item # ETBC7 you purchased. You'll then need to find a suitable ground nearby for the white wire, a 12v power source for the black wire, and the red wire will connect to the cold side of the brake light switch that only shows power when you press the brake pedal. Using a circuit tester like item # PTW2992 will make this easier.

I attached an installation video below along with a couple of wiring diagrams so you can see how to get these parts installed.
