Question:

I'm getting my new 2027 GMC Canyon set up to flat tow behind our motorhome and would like to use Roadmaster for most of the setup. I do want a portable braking system that I can remove when we're not towing instead of something permanently installed in the truck. Can you recommend everything I'll need for a complete setup?

Hey Derek, congratulations on the new Canyon! I can definitely help you out. For a complete setup you will need a tow bar, base plate, safety cables, wiring, and then your portable brake system. For a Roadmaster setup I recommend the following:

-Roadmaster Falcon 3HD Tow Bar # RM27NQ

-Roadmaster Tow Bar Cover # RM-055-3 (optional)

-Roadmaster 80" Hybrid Coiled-to-Straight Safety Cables # RM-674

-Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-15267

-Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit # RM-156-25

-Blue Ox Patriot Portable Flat Tow Brake System # BLU37TR

-Blue Ox 12 Volt Power Outlet Kit # BLU33QV

Roadmaster makes great, reliable parts for flat towing, but for the braking system I'd recommend going with the Blue Ox Patriot. It's one of the best portable systems out there and can easily be removed when you aren't towing. You'll also need that 12V outlet to provide a dedicated power source for the Patriot.

More than likely you will also need a high-low adapter like # e52ZV to keep your setup level. I recommend measuring once you have the Canyon and motorhome together so you can choose the correct rise or drop. I attached an article further down on this page which explains how to measure.

Derek, I just did my '26 Canyon using Roadmaster base plate, (RM48GR), Duo-Brake Stay-IN-Play brake system, and the Curt Plug 'n Play dingy harness, 52108. (contact eTrailer for availability.) Also ran a Roadmaster charge line to keep the battery in the truck charged while towing. I opted to use NSA Ready Brute II tow bar because I already had it. Frankly, I would have preferred the Roadmaster Sterling or Falcon. Through my research and experience with other brands, I chose Roadmaster due to the build quality and what seemed like heavier duty components. Nothing wrong with the others which I have used the past, just my observations and preference. View eTrailers video for a complete detailed install procedure. . Not too complicated. The install took about half the day with 2 of us which have a lot of experience installing these things.
