Question:
Can you please explain to me the differences between the various Thule bike racks? Specifically I am looking at the Passage and the Gateway - what is it that the extra money buys with the Gateway? For reference, I have a Volvo XC90 no trailer hitch and would be using this occasionally only.

The main difference between the Thule Passage # TH911XT and the Gateway # TH78VR is how each functions. The Passage arms (that hold the bikes) can only move with the upper leg. This limits the vehicles that it fits and its ability to hold bikes level .
The Gateway arms move independently of the upper and lower legs and each other. This allows for more vehicle fits and greater flexibility for mounting bikes level.
The Passage requires removing a nut and bolt on each arm to make adjustments. While not difficult it does take longer than the Gateway which has Cinch Levers that make adjustments quick and easy. I have linked video reviews of both bike racks for you.
If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground clearance. I have to use these adapters and without them my wife's bike would be at a severe angle and I would not be able to load my son's bike at all. I have linked a video showing how the adapter works.
