Troubleshooting Weak Trailer Brake Performance from 2011 Rockwood 296 HW

Question:
Today my 2011 rockwood 296 hw trailer currently has 7 inch hubs and st 205 75 r 14 tires with 5 studs on 4.5 inch centers. This trailer has always had poor braking from the two axles. I am wondering if the former owner might have swapped out 10 inch hubs for the 7 inch hubs. is it likely that this trailer originally came with 10 inch wheel hubs? I got a long AI answer from Chat GPT saying it is highly unlikely trailer came with 7.25 inch wheels. So my question, is can I install 10 hubs on this trailer?

Hey Cary, so the correct size brakes to use for your axles would be based on the axle capacity. You can't switch between drum diameters without changing axles as there is only one size drum made for each axle capacity basically. So if you have 7-1/4 inch that would mean you most likely have 2k axles. I don't think your issue is wrong size brake components though.
Do you know if the brake assemblies are self adjusting assemblies or manual adjust? Sometimes this is brake assemblies that are out of adjustment, sometimes it's that the wire for the assemblies is too light of a gauge, or it can be a bad seal allowing grease into the drum and making the brakes not be able to grab. It's probably just a good idea to pull the hubs and see what's going on.
