Can I Add Baby Moon Hubcaps to the Wheels on My 1973 Hunter Compact 2 Camper?

Updated 06/15/2026 | Published 06/09/2026

Question:

We have been renovating a 1973 Hunter Compact 2 Camper trailer. We do not know if the wheels are original, but would like to complete the vintage look with baby moon hubcaps, if possible. The tires are R15s, wheel has 5 lugs. We include a pic . Thanks for any suggestions you may have!

Hello Michelle,

Thanks for reaching out and for including the photo. It looks like you've put a lot of work into bringing your Hunter Compact 2 back to life.

While I can't verify whether the wheels are original to the trailer, the wheel in your photo appears very similar to steel spoke-style trailer wheels like # AM20422. The Americana Baby Moon Trailer Wheel Center Cap # AM90086 requires a wheel with retention tabs that hold the cap in place, and your current wheel does not appear to have those tabs.

To use the baby moon hubcaps, you would need to switch to a conventional steel wheel designed to accept them, such as the Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel with Offset # AM20504. As long as your trailer uses a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern, this wheel would be a great option for achieving that classic vintage look while providing the attachment points needed for the # AM90086 center cap.

If you would like me to see about getting white option added to our site, please let me know. Many of our neighbors (customers) get them powder coated to match their vintage camper, please see image I attached.

How long have you been working on this fun project? What has been the hardest part so far?

Thank you, Kate, for your reply and suggestions. We might just have to wait a bit before “completing” the vintage look. Maybe next year? Thanks, too, for your interest in our “little” project! We bought the trailer during Covid (2020), working on it off and since then, doing major things like replacing major things like the axle to smaller things like recovering the cushions and painting cabinetry. The hardest thing thus far was replacing the window gasketing! Perhaps it was actual product we used…not sure. It’s all in, but not without a lot of effort and some colorful language ??. ! Thanks again!!!

@MichelleD I love that you are taking your time with the project, just going to enjoy it that much more when it is finished. Colorful language is just fine while getting stuff done, just try not to throw any wrenches =) If you have any other questions along the way, you know where to find me. We would love to see the finished product when you are done.
