Does Axle of Trailer Need to be Removed to Install New Spindles

Published 06/01/2026

Question:

Hi, I have a used large tandem axle 5-horse trailer. Some genius thought it was a great idea to weld the castle nut to the spindle on one axle, so Im looking at the TRU37FR spindle. That leaves having to get it welded on. I think Id have to remove the axle completely and take it to a shop. The bolts holding the axle on the frame are 15/16. I dont what to reuse them if I dont have to. Do you carry those bolts and know what the torque specs are on them? Thanks

Hey Rico, so installing a new spindle does take some special equipment to ensure you get the alignment right. You probably don't have to take the axle off but I would call around to local welders/fabrictors to you and ask if they have the needed jigs to install an axle spindle and once you find one who does you'd be set. That said..I can't believe someone thought it was a good idea to weld the spindle nut on!

@RicoM We don't carry axle bolts as typically what we deal with has a leaf spring that actually connects between the axle and the trailer frame.
