Does Dylux Tankless Water Heater For Campers Need To Be Bypassed And Winterized?

Published 05/27/2026

Question:

My old tank water heater had a bypass kit for winterizing. Does switching to the Dylux change how I should think about draining and winterizing the water heater?

Good question, Rachel. Switching to the Dylux RV Tankless Water Heater # DY54FR does change the process a bit because you no longer have a 6 or 10 gallon tank to drain. Instead, you’re protecting the internal water passages inside the tankless heater.

The Dylux does have auto frost protection that activates below 43°F, but I would look at that as active protection while the RV is in use, not as a substitute for winterizing. If the RV is going into storage, sitting without propane or 12V power, or seeing sustained freezing weather, the water heater and plumbing still need to be drained and winterized properly. You won't need a bypass kit.

Rachel, is your camper stored through winter, or do you use it year-round?
