What Trailer Hitch will Fit My 2021 Toyota Highlander Platinum with 20" Spare?

Thanks for writing in!

I have a hitch that is going to work with your full size spare, but our etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e75ZR is NOT going to work with your 20" spare.

The only option we have that will work with a full size spare on your 2021 Toyota Highlander Platinum is the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # EH35VR. I checked the B&W and it will not work with a full size spare.

If you needed to pair the hitch with some wiring for light towing or a hitch-mounted accessory, you’ll want the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C59236. This will require splicing into the vehicle wiring since there isn’t a plug and play option available for the 2021 Highlander.

If you plan on towing something with brakes, you’ll need to build on top of the # C59236 by installing the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7. There’s a bit more involved here. You’ll need to run a power wire from the battery with circuit protection, and also run a brake output wire from the front of the vehicle to the back. Not overly difficult, just a little time consuming.

If you are towing a trailer with brakes, you’ll also need a brake controller. I really like the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Universal Wiring Harness - Dash Knob - Proportional # RED52VR. Having that knob within arm’s reach is great for adjusting braking intensity, and the manual override right there is a nice bonus too.
