Can A Smaller Gauge Wire Still Be Used When Hooking Up The Reverse Lights To The Curt C57672?

Updated 04/20/2026 | Published 04/15/2026

Question:

Will I be able to use this Curt connecter Yellow reverse wireinch and splice into my taillight assembly on my 2017 Chevy Express? There is a major size difference in gauge of wire?

Hi Richard!

Guessing that wire on your 2017 Express van is a lot smaller? Either way, that will not be an issue with the Curt Trailer Connector Adapter - 4-Way to 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat # C57672.

What we do when something like that happens is strip about twice the length you typically would on the wire jacket. Then just fold the copper wire over on itself and put that into the butt connector. That will give it plenty of contact surface and purchase. I would make sure you seal it with electrical tape pretty good though. Definitely want that help as strongly as you can make it. On that note, if I were doing this I would cut the butt connector that comes with that wire off and use the 12-10 Gauge Heat Shrink # DW05745-1 to really make sure it's secure.

What are you planning on towing?
