What is Difference Between Brake Light Switch and Demco Stoplight Kit for Flat Towing Ford Maverick

Updated 04/20/2026 | Published 04/14/2026

Question:

I am installing the Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo DM86VR on a 2026 Ford Maverick. Is it better to use the RM87GR Brake switch and bracket then the the Brake relay RM88400? Also is the DM88UV air regulator required/recommended for this application?

Hey Tom, the brake relay part # RM-88400 and the brake switch kit part # RM87GR actually do two different things. The brake switch kit is an easy way to get the stoplight signal isolated to trigger a braking system whereas the brake relay part # RM-88400 is designed to prevent the brake light from taking over the turn signals on the towed vehicle's taillight wiring. So one doesn't take the place of the other.

Since you will be towing a 2026 Ford Maverick you would need the Demco Stay IN Play DUO Inline Air Pressure Regulator # DM88UV as well for best braking performance.

It does look like you do need the brake light relay as well.

I did not need the break light switch or relay. I was able to tap into the 3rd brake light inside the cab above the back window.I installed the Demco wireless Coach link transmitter behind the backseat works with no issues.

I installed the stay n play duo on a 23 Bronco with the 2.7 V6. When the Bronco is put in tow mode, it disables the Bronco brake lights, so the Bronco brake lights won't override the blinkers (no relay needed). Also, the V6 has electric power assist brakes not vacuum assist. There won't be any power assist to help the stay n play duo so it needs to push harder on the brake pedal. It does this by leaving the end of the vacuum boost line from the stay n play duo open (do not plug). That tells the stay n play duo to use more air pressure. My setup has worked well for 3 years towing the Bronco 15,000 miles so far.

I installed the stay n play on my 2020 Jeep Wrangler. The videos helped a lot. I ran all my wiring in split loom conduit to keep it neat and clean and to prevent any rubbing or chaffing. Also used the wireless coach link. Works great. I like the eaze of hooking up to the coach. Plug in the wiring and flip the switch. Tom R.
