Can I add a RV A/C like FR59TD to my enclosed trailer?

Question:

Why does the Furrion Chill Cube list in its specs that it is not compatible with enclosed trailers? Do they offer units that are compatible?

Great question Alan, I can explain!

The main reason we don’t recommend installing an RV A/C on an enclosed trailer is that most trailers aren’t built for it from the factory.

RV roofs are reinforced to support the weight and mounting pressure of an A/C unit, while enclosed trailers often aren’t, which can lead to flexing or sealing issues. They’re also usually not insulated or designed to hold and circulate cooled air properly, so the A/C may struggle to perform and run constantly.

It can be done, but it usually requires reinforcing the roof, adding a 14" opening, and a 120V power source.

How do you use your enclosed trailer; camping, hauling toys, or a mobile workshop?

James, The trailer is used to haul our race car. It is insulated and prewired for air conditioning. I have dual Coleman Mach 4s on out other race trailer and they function fine. The question i had was specifically about the Furion chill cube. I have never seen one in person and liked the fact that it didn't require a soft start for a small generator. Alan

@Alan my apologies, when manufacturers say their RV A/C units aren’t “compatible with enclosed trailers,” it’s mostly a precaution on their end. These units are designed around typical RV conditions, and enclosed trailers can be a tougher environment in a few key ways. Because of these variables, manufacturers include that disclaimer to avoid potential warranty issues. That said, many customers successfully use RV A/C units in enclosed trailers by ensuring good insulation, proper airflow, and adequate power. Hope that helps!

@JamesD I installed this unit on my cargo conversion and it works great. It had a/c prior so the hole was reinforced. I added 1/2 inch wood offset on the inside ceiling so the provided foam (1) fit perfectly. Did not use the second piece for thicker RV roofs. Works great and will run you out even in the Texas heat!

I installed the Furrion Chill Cube on my RV to replace a Coleman Mach 3. I can't speak to your trailer construction, but the Chill Cube is lighter than my Mach 3 was and fit the same opening. If you have experience putting a Coleman on that type of trailer with success, the Chill Cube should be just as easy.

I would believe that you could install these A/C units on an enclosed car trailer but I’m no engineer. If the roof is not reinforced then I would add an oversized aluminum plate to carry the extra weight. We really are satisfied with the Furrion variable speed compressor air conditioner. It’s much quieter and uses less power than our previous units. I installed two 18k BTU units on my fifth wheel camper and can even run both at the same time in the dehumidifier mode on a 14 ga. Extension cord on a 15 amp breaker in my driveway. Highly recommend this product.
