Can I Safely Use A Hitch Extension Towing East To West Alta 2400kth With A 2022 Ram 2500?
Updated 04/17/2026 | Published 04/12/2026 >
Question:
Pulling an east to west Alta 2400kth rv with my 2022 ram 2500 but the front cap of the rv makes contact with the body panel of the bed right above the tail lights in tight turning. I need about 5” or more of clearance and am having a hard time finding an extension suitable for the job in terms of weight. Will this particular extender work or is there any other options available?

Hey Philip, you’re running into a pretty common clearance issue there. An extension would give you the space you need, but the problem is capacity. Most hitch extenders cut your tongue weight and towing capacity by 50%, and with a trailer the size of the 2400KTH, that’s going to put you well outside a safe range.
So even though something like the # RM-071-1075 would physically give you more clearance, it’s not a practical or safe solution for that much weight.
Unfortunately, we really don't have a great option for a hitch extension that would work with a camper of that size.
Are you using a weight distribution hitch?
Have you ever measured the total weight of your camper once its loaded?

Be careful of the tongue weight as stated previously. I installed a Rubicon Full Floater rear diff into my 2024 Willys that went from 3500 to 5000lb towing capacity. Also incorporated the Air Lift 1000 air bags to tow a 3800lb trailer along with a weight distribution hitch I installed the extension hitch and tried out with a 137lb bike rack with 3 electric bikes weighing 90lbs each. I use the 10% tongue weight method, so I was clear over the limit of 250lb extender limit for my vehicle. The extender was fine, however, the bike rack was sagging and you could see there would be a problem controlling a trailer with a heavier than specified tongue weight.
