Brake Controller With Full Power Manual Override

Updated 04/13/2026 | Published 04/06/2026

Question:

Do you have a brake controller for electric brakes thats manual override, overrides its current voltage settings? For example, if the controller is set at 4.8, will the manual override, when applied, go progressively past 4.8 and potentially to 12? My application is that I have a flat bed trailer and sometimes its empty while other times I may have 3 tons of gravel on it. When its loaded I need aggressive braking I can control. When its not loaded, I dont need much brake at all if any.

Hey Tharon! Your standard proportional brake controllers will apply the brakes with the manual override, but it will only go up to whatever output (gain) you have the controller set to. It won't go to full 12V power if you don't have the gain set to the max.

My recommendation is to use a Redarc brake controller with the control knob. You can quickly increase the gain when you're loaded and then press the knob for manual override up to that setting. You can do this with the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED52VR or the Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR. The Elite also adds a user-controlled mode so you can apply the trailer brakes more directly, which is really helpful when you're loaded down with gravel and want more aggressive control.

What kind of truck are you towing with?
