Question:
I have a 2022 Ford Maverick with factory installed hitch and 4 pin wiring. I will be towing a small Rustic Trails Polar Bear camper with brakes, weight less than 2000 lbs. Can this be connected to the 4 pin built into the bumper of my truck?

Hey Paul!
That Polar Bear travel trailer has electric brakes which require a 7 way round connector at the back of your truck. You already did the first step which is having a 4 way, but now you'll need to convert it to a 7 way with # ETBC7. This is very common for all vehicles, and it's not difficult to install. Check out the install videos I've linked below.
You'll also need a brake controller to handle the brakes and send the braking signal to the 7 way you will add. You can add the RedArc # RED52VR brake controller. This is universal and gets wired in under the dash, and ties into the # ETBC7 wiring that runs up to the dash.
I've attached a simple wiring diagram pic to show how this controller gets installed. I also attached an install video for this system.
The only simpler solution is to install the # ETBC7 7 way, then use a wireless brake controller that plugs into that 7 way so that you don't have to run brake controller wires under the dash to the brake switch etc. If you go this route, you'll need the # ETBC7 and Curt Echo # C51180.
Where do you plan to take it to for your summer trips?

Hi Paul, Andrew's comment is right on target. I used the RedArc controller and 7 way connector on my 2020 Hyundai Tucson and it works perfectly. Yes, it takes a while to run wires up front to the battery. Take your time and stay away from the exhaust. Use zip ties to secure them to brake lines or fuel lines. Mount the circuit brakers in a convenient location under the hood. Mount the RedArc controller under the dash and secure it to something solid. I mounted my controller dial in the center console (easy to access). I use the controller for towing my 2000 lb travel trailer. Controls the brakes perfectly. E-Trailer has what you need for easy installation. Good luck. :o)

I was asked to comment on this. I installed this last summer on my 2015 ford edge. I had factory 4 pin but needed a brake controller for a small house trailer we rented. It works great. In the rear you can connect this to your 4 pin. But then you need to run 2 wires forward. One to the brake controller and one directly to battery for power. The hardest part for me was getting to T into the brake wire. But the kit has all the parts. I used the prodigy p3 controller and it worked as expected.
