Replacing Hubs on 1960s Olympian Boat Trailer

Updated 07/09/2014 | Published 07/06/2014

Question:

Hi, I have an old olympian boat trailer from the 60s. It has an integral hub and i am looking to replace it with a regular bolt on wheel hub. The spindle is 1inch diameter and 3 3/8inch long and i cant seem to find a hub that will fit my spindle. Do you have a hub that will fit? Thanks.

To find a replacement hub for your 1960's boat trailer you will need to match a few characteristics from your current set up: bearing numbers, seal number, wheel bolt pattern and axle weight rating. While it may be possible to match up these features to find a new hub (using the link provided), given the age of the trailer you may be better off simply replacing your entire axle assembly with a complete kit that includes the axle, hubs, bearings and seals. This will ensure all components are new and in good order so that they will wear evenly and provide the same life span.

The link provided will take you to our main page for trailer axles. You can use the filters in the left-hand margin to narrow the results shown based on the features you need.

For example, we offer a Dexter 89-inch 3500-lb-rated axle kit with idler hubs, part # 35545I-EZ-89, that includes the axle with EZ-Lube spindles, 5-on-4-1/2 hubs, bearings, seals, grease caps and lug nuts and bearing grease. The distance between hub faces is 89-inches and the distance between spring centers is 74-inches.

Similar kits are available with 60-inch 2000-lb axles, part # 20440I-EZ-60, which happens to include hubs with a 4-on-4-inch bolt pattern.

For reference I have linked an article and video on wheel bearings and hub replacement.
