Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

  • Pros/Cons To Replacing Or Upgrading Tires And Wheels On A Pop Up Camper
Hello Paul. The main factor to consider when replacing/upgrading your tires is the clearance in the fender area. Our rule of thumb is that you want at least 3" between the tire and the fender, and at least 1" between the inside of the tire and the frame of the trailer. If you have already checked and verified that you have adequate clearance, there really is no downside to going with larger tires. One thing to keep in mind when upgrading tires is we do not want to overkill the load rating...

  • What is the Difference Between 4.80/4.00-8 and 5.70-8 Trailer Tires for a Boat Trailer
Both the 4.80/4.00-8 and 5.70-8 tires sizes will fit the same wheel size, 8 x 3-3/4 inch. The 5.70 is taller by 2 inches and wider by 1.2 inches. If you have more than 1 inch of space between the tire and a fender and more than 1.2 inches between the side of the tire and the trailer then you can use the larger size such as # AM10010 rated for 715 pounds at 50 psi. If you do not have the space then stick with the same size you have, 4.80/4.00-8 using # AM10002 rated for 590 pounds at 60...

  • Wider Tire to Replace 4.80 x 8 Load Range C Tires
The 4.8 x 8 tires like # AM30060 are 4.7 inches wide and use a 3-3/4 inch wide wheel. For a wider tire I recommend the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire - 5.70-8 - Load Range C # AM10012. This tire is 5.9 inches wide. This tire will be 18 inches diameter when inflated and is rated for 910 lbs at 75 psi. This tire will not only be wider but will almost be 2 inches taller raising your trailer by about 1 inch. For any other tire, you would also need to replace the wheel.

  • Will a 5.30 x 12 Trailer Tire Fit the Same Rim as a 4.80 x 12 Trailer Tire
Yes, a 5.30 x 12 tire will fit the same rim as a 4.80 x 12 tire. Both tire sizes fit on a 4 inch wide rim. There are a couple of things to consider when changing tire sizes. First, the larger 5.30 will be approximately 1.4 inches taller than the 4.80 so you will need to make sure that you have enough clearance above the tire. The 5.30 is also wider by 1/2 an inch so you will need to make sure there is clearance behind the tire as well for the new size. Also, the capacity of the larger...

  • Which is Better for Highway Use 4.80-12 or 5.30-12 Trailer TIres
The 5.30-12 tires, being wider, are going to make more contact with the road. This means that the noise, and heat build up will be higher than a 4.80-12 tire but the rolling resistance will actually be less because the tire is larger diameter. The wider a tire is the more contact it makes with the road and the more contact with the road the more you are going to feel bumps as you travel. A 4.80-12 tire will be 20.5 inches in diameter whereas a 5.30-12 tire will be 21.9 inches. You would...

  • What is the Difference Between Load Range B and C Trailer Tires
Load range B trailer tires are going to have a lower capacity than C load range tires. Basically that, psi rating, and the ply rating are the only differences. A higher load range tire would last a little longer than lower load ranges of the same size but it will not increase the capacity of the trailer. If you go with tire # AM10004 it is rated for 745 pounds at 90 psi. And tire # AM10002 is rated for 590 pounds at 60 psi. Both tires will fit 8 inch x 3-3/4 inch wheels. I have included...

  • Will a 4.80-8 Trailer Tire Fit in Place of a 4.00-8 Tire
Yes, a 4.80-8 tire will fit in place of a 4.00-8 tire. That is why a lot of times you will see both sizes in the product's title or description and even on the actual tire, such as # AM10002. This is a load range B tire rated for 590 pounds at 60 psi. I have linked a video review of this tire for you.

  • Replacement Tire Recommendation for a Troy Bilt Log Splitter
Hey Thomas, thanks for reaching out! For a replacement tire I recommend the 4.80/4.00-8 Kenda Loadstar K371 # AM10002 which is a Load Range B (590 lbs at 60 psi), but when it comes to a wheel, you're either going to need to use the exact same one you're currently using, or you'll need to get a whole need tire/wheel combo from the manufacturer. All of our wheels install using wheel studs, but when I looked up your log splitter it looks like the wheels secure directly to the spindle, so...

  • How to Tell if Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Tire Will be Able to Run at 60 psi on Craftsman Garden Cart Wheel
Hey Joe, As much as I would like to say those wheels will work great with the Kenda Loadstar K371 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10002 inflated to 60 psi, those are very different wheels than standard trailer wheels so the best thing to do is reach out to the wheel manufacturer to confirm. For trailer wheels, if the tire fits, then the wheel can handle the pressure, but you aren't installing this on a trailer tire so that rule doesn't quite apply which is why I say check with the manufacturer....

  • Will 5.70-8 Tires Fit The Same Rims as 4.80/4.00-8 Tires
Hi Ralph; 4.80/4.00-8 tires like # AM10002 typically fit 8" x 3-3/4" rims. The same is true for a 5.70-8 tire like the # AM10013. Your main concern will be loss of clearance. Moving to the larger tire size will cause you to lose approximately 1/2" on the inside and 1" of clearance on the top. You want to have at least 2" on the inside and 3" on top for proper clearance. Is there a specific reason you want the larger tire?

  • Can 4.80/4.00-8 Tires Be Upgraded To Larger Size For Higher Speed Rating
Hello again Mark; as long as you don't exceed the 65 mph rating you can stick with a tire like the Kenda Loadstar K371 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10002. Moving to a larger tire with a higher speed rating is going to mean a fairly large size difference. To see if you can use one of these tires you will need to measure for clearance. The closest thing that also uses an 8" wheel would be the Kenda 215/60-8 # AM3H290. This has a speed rating of M for 81 mph. However, it is significantly wider...

  • What is Speed Rating of Trailer Tires in Size 4.80-8
For smaller tire sizes like the 4.80-8 that you mentioned the highest speed rating we have is 65 mph like the part # AM10002. This is in part due to the smaller diameter of the tire which means it will be spinning more revolutions at the same speed as a larger tire. This increases heat build up.

The Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30000 is an excellent tire and wheel combo that has a 4 on 4" bolt pattern and has review great reviews from our customers. If you just wanted the wheel it is part # AM20001 and if you just wanted the tire it is part # AM10002. We also have the Redline Spindle # TRU94FR which measures 1.25" where it installed on the axle but it measures 0.999" where the bearings ride and uses 1" bearings, # L44643. • Will 4.80/4.00-8 Tire Fit 9" Rim
    Hi Jeff; the # AM20035 will only work with 9" tires like the 6.90/6.00-9 # AM10040. Your typical 4.80/4.00-8 tire like # AM10002 fits an 8" x 3-3/4" rim like the # AM20001.

  • Will Smaller Tire Fit In Place of 4.80/4.00-8 Tire
A smaller 3.5-8 tire will not be able to fit in place of a 4.80/4.00-8 tire such as the Kenda Loadstar K371 Bias Trailer Tire - 4.80/4.00-8 - Load Range B # AM10002 (590 lb capacity) or Load Range C # AM10004 (745 lb capacity). The reason is the smaller section width, because 4.80/4.00-8 tires fit 8" x 3-3/4" rims such as Steel Trailer Wheel # AM20008 (Galvanized) or # AM20006 (White) and a 3.5-8 tire is not wide enough to fit. • Should 10 Year Old Trailer Tires be Replaced
Hey Jeff, this is a great question but generally trailer tires live to be about 4-6 years old before it's time to put them out to pasture. After that they just end up being unreliable and prone to failure. Yours being 10 years old and having lived through desert heat I would say they should be replaced. That said, many people (including my Dad) push past this limit without even thinking about it and it did work for some time. Even if they look fine they rubber has broken down to some...

  • Can I Replace a 4.80-8 Trailer Tire with a 4.80-12 or 5.30-12 Trailer Tire
You can replace a 4.80-8 trailer tire with a 4.80-12 or a 5.30-12 trailer tire, but there are a few things to consider before making the change. First, 4.80-12 and 5.30-12 tires are going to have a larger overall diameter than a 4.80-8 tire, by about 4 inches, so you will want to make sure your trailer has enough room in the fender well to accept the larger tire and wheel. Also, a 5.30-12 tire will be about 1 inch wider. The width will not make as big of a difference as the diameter,...

  • Is There a High Speed Rated 4.80/4.00-8 Trailer Tire
These smaller diameter trailer tires simply aren't rated for high speeds. The standard for a tire this size is 65 mph. There would not be enough space for a tire with higher speed rating so the best option would be to simply reduce speed while traveling. If you travel in excess of the tire's capability, this will lead to increased temperatures and the potential for a blowout. I recommend a quality tire like the Kenda Loadstar K371 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM10002 and staying within the...

  • Can 8 Inch Trailer Tires be Replaced with 12 Inch Trailer Tires
Hey, thanks. You're not so bad yourself! Going to a larger tire size is possible but there are a few things to think about. Chief among these things is clearance. When going from an 8 inch tire to a 12 inch tire the diameter will increase by 4.4 inches. This means that if there is anything above the tire such as a fender the larger tire may not fit. Even if you have the clearance now you also have to account for the travel of the suspension. The width between the two sizes is not a concern...
