Can Trailer Tire PSI Be Different From Listed PSI on Trailer

Question:

I currently have Provider tires, 235/85R16 that are G rated on my fifth wheel rated at 4400 lbs and the fifth wheel states to operate at 110 psi, how would these Goodyear Enurance tires work for me with only 80 psi and a 3860 lb rating. My fifth wheel trailer is rated at 15000lbs. I am currently looking at the same provider tires but I do like the American Made Goodyears. If I had an accident and was found running 80 psi tires instead of what the trailer recommends at 110 psi, I could be in trouble.

Hey Dan! The psi on your replacement trailer tires does not have to match what is listed on your 5th wheel. That is the listed psi for the tires that came with it from the factory. It is important to follow the tire manufacturers listed psi no matter what tires you choose. Failure to do so could lead to blown tires and the accident you don't want to be in trouble for.

The Goodyear Endurance ST235/85R16 Radial Tire w/ 16" Margay Aluminum Wheel # LH35VR does have a rating of 3,640 lbs at 80 psi. I'm assuming your 5th wheel is tandem axle, so that is 14,560 lbs for the set of four tires. Since your pin weight isn't going to be on the axles, you don't need the full 15k rating. Pin weight is typically 15-20% of the trailer weight, so even if you're at your 15k GVWR you would have quite a bit less than 14,560 lbs on those tires.

What kind of 5th wheel do you have? Any big trips coming up this spring once you get your tires replaced?

I have a Keystone Alpine 2018 year model and Im planning on heading to Port Aransas, Texas and on to South Padre. Those Provider Tires that came stock on the trailer have been bullet proof not a single problem and have been looking here on etrailer for the those same tires, and they have great reviews, because you are on of the few people that stock those tires. I think I watch too may You Tube videos on these tires, different people offer very different opinions. On a second note do you recommend wheel bearing/break maintenence evey 12 months or 12,000 miles? I plan on having a wheel bearing/brakes service done in the next week or two at Triple M Trailers and they recommended the 12 month/12,000 mile service on all trailers. Thanks, Dan Sharp

@DanS yes, every 12 months or 12,000 miles. I went ahead and attached a trailer maintenance schedule for your reference. Tires can get pretty complicated, it is definitely easy to go down the rabbit hole. Something important to remember is a lot of the stories you hear online about problems and failures probably don't include all of the information. Most people don't like to admit things like they have never checked their tire pressure and that is probably why they had a blowout. The Goodyear Endurance are definitely nice and reliable. I have them on my Jayco and they have held up really well. If you want to stick with Provider we also have the Provider HD # TTWPRG235R16 which matches your current load rating. If you're wanting those wheels as well we don't have a wheel and tire combo but you can grab the # LH78VR separately and mount them yourself or have the shop do it for you.
