Do Boat Trailer Bunks Need Carpet to Install Tie Down Bunk Slicks

Question:
I have an old john boat trailer Im replacing the bunks on. In going to buy new 2×6s. If I go with the slicks, I dont see a need to carpet my boards. Is that assumption correct? Thanks Joel

Its a 1978 Fisher Marine. Seems like carpet may be a little more gentle on the boat though. Thanks for your response
