Are the 2" and 2-1/2" Weigh Safe Shanks Interchangeable?

Updated 01/29/2026 | Published 01/26/2026

Question:

Hello, I am looking at weight distribution hitches and this one looks like the ticket for what I need for tongue weight and GTW ratings. I see that Weigh Safe offers the same rated hitch with a 2inch shank too P/N WS94RR. Right now I have a truck with a 2inch receiver but am looking to switch to a 3/4 ton truck here in the next couple years. Are the shanks interchangeable between 2inch and 2.5inch for the same weight rated hitch? It would be nice to just have to buy a new shank when the time comes I am not a fan of the sleeve adapters and the extra slop they can add in a hitch as opposed to having to buy a whole new hitch setup just to pull the same camper with a different truck. Thanks,

Hey Jordan thanks for the information! The 2" and 2-1/2" shanks for the Weigh Safe weight distribution systems are interchangeable amongst Weigh Safe systems.

What I recommend doing is getting the Weigh Safe True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch item # WS94RR with the 2" shank. This way you are setup currently with the truck you're using now.

When you upgrade trucks you may run into a height difference that requires you to purchase a longer shank. It's wild how tall F-250's and 2500 trucks are getting.

I've listed the options for 2-1/2" Weigh Safe shanks below by the amount of drop they provide:

6" Drop - Weigh Safe item # WS59RR. This is the same height as the one included with the 2" item # WS94RR.

8" Drop - Weigh Safe item # WS87RR

10" Drop - Weigh Safe item # WS69RR

What kind of trailer do you have?

Jerred, Thanks for getting back with me. I figured the shanks were interchangeable but wasn’t sure. No camper yet but was doing research in advance so I could get one on order as soon as I found a camper I was looking for. Probably something in the #8k and 30’ range. Seems to be about all I’d like to pull with a half ton and still has a good deal of space in it. Upgrade to the 3/4 ton and it’ll handle that trailer no problem.

@Jordan You're welcome! The Weigh Safe True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch item # WS94RR you were looking at is for trailer's with tongue weights no higher than 1,200 lbs. Depending on which trailer you end up with you may want to look at the 850 lbs tongue weight item # WS79VR. If you have any additional questions or need help down the road don't hesitate to reach out.
