Solution for Needing Replacement Trailer Tire for 155/80-13

Updated 12/08/2025 | Published 11/24/2025

Question:

I recently acquired a 1970 Hobie Cat. The trailer tires 1 axle, 155/80D13 are about 55 years old. Wheels are 5-lug 4.5?. I can’t find direct replacements for these tires. What do you recommend? Do ST155/80R13’s exist? Should I replace the entire wheel set? I have minimal fender clearance, and minimal ground clearance, so I’d like to not change the size much either direction. Any help is welcome!

Hey Eric, the closest tire size to the ST155/80R13 you have is the ST175/80-13.

I did some calculations on the tire sizes and found that the difference between the 175/80R13 and the 155/80R13 is pretty small.

The 175/80 is 24 inches inches tall whereas the 155/80 is 22.7 inches tall for a difference of 1.3 inches total, but that difference needs to be split since the overall diameter is split since the wheel rotates on the axle. So basically the wheel will take up an additional .65 inches of your fender well.

The width difference is pretty small at .78 inches. So basically 3/4 of an inch wider

For a tire you would want the part # TTWTRTM1758013C made by Taskmaster as it is a radial tire with a higher 81 mph speed rating. Most trailer tires are only rated for 65 mph.

Hey Eric, how did the ST175/80R13 tires work out on your Hobie Cat trailer? Did the small change in height and width still give you enough fender and ground clearance? Your update could make it easier for others with older trailers to choose the right size.
